The 80 series brakes could be better in my opinion, but as another data point my '97 can lockup/squeal it's 285s and actuate the abs on pavement pretty easily. I had to make a rapid stop just yesterday on a high-traction surface and was pretty easily able to keep the brake pressure right at, and occasionally over, the abs actuate / tire lockup point making the stop. If I had wanted I could have stayed in that ABS/Squall zone but my reflexes are to modulate brakes to right at breaking traction vs. letting the ABS do that. The kids were surprised by how quickly we stopped and excited to hear the bits of tire squall.
I've had a few other cases where due to lower traction and mixed surfaces where the ABS was a real asset in helping keep control during panic stops and even though those have been very rare I've kept the abs in case another one occurs. I'll add that most of the vehicles that I've owned and operated did not have ABS so I'm familiar with, comfortable with and have no problem with non-abs systems. If it's in proper condition though I prefer an ABS setup in vehicles that I drive on the highway in particular.
