ABS actuator fail?

The 80 series brakes could be better in my opinion, but as another data point my '97 can lockup/squeal it's 285s and actuate the abs on pavement pretty easily. I had to make a rapid stop just yesterday on a high-traction surface and was pretty easily able to keep the brake pressure right at, and occasionally over, the abs actuate / tire lockup point making the stop. If I had wanted I could have stayed in that ABS/Squall zone but my reflexes are to modulate brakes to right at breaking traction vs. letting the ABS do that. The kids were surprised by how quickly we stopped and excited to hear the bits of tire squall.

I've had a few other cases where due to lower traction and mixed surfaces where the ABS was a real asset in helping keep control during panic stops and even though those have been very rare I've kept the abs in case another one occurs. I'll add that most of the vehicles that I've owned and operated did not have ABS so I'm familiar with, comfortable with and have no problem with non-abs systems. If it's in proper condition though I prefer an ABS setup in vehicles that I drive on the highway in particular.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. Glad you have a sweet braking system, and you're in the minority I'd venture to guess.

Issues seem to be amplified on forums so it's hard to know for sure how many folks have decent braking so don't chime in? That said, it took a good bit of effort and replacement of most parts in the system to get what I feel like is adequate, but not great braking. I'm sure the 80 will ever stop nearly as well as the other, more modern and typically lighter cars that I drive these days and it seems to have a softer feel and more gradual engagement rate, relatively speaking, by design.

I don't routinely get the ABS to activate on dry pavement with my 315s, but it definitely stops right now when I put my foot in it. That said, dry pavement isn't really the scenario where I want the ABS to work. It works on snow and ice, it works on loose gravel and occasionally on wet pavement. Could my 80's brakes be better, sure. Are they bad for a 30 year old, 3 ton rig on 35" tires? Nope.
