A442F shifting from 1st directly to 3rd

Most likely suspect at this point is the solenoid pigtail/sub–harness, as was suggested above. They are still available new.

Wow, I'm surprised that is still something that can be had new and is currently on shelves in the US. I'm gonna order one just to have on hand even if I do plan on replacing the A442 with an 8HP

This is one of the many reasons I drive Land Cruisers. I just bought brand new halogen headlights, with relays and pigtails, from Toyota, for my 40 yesterday.
