I finally finished the HG replacement on my (new to me) 1996 FZJ80. I also finally got it tagged and insured while on Christmas vacation. So, On Jan 01 I met up with a local group and headed out to Rowher Flats/Bouquet Canyon to see how this thing actually does. I could get used to this coil spring, automatic transmission wheeling thing. The only mod I have is the CDL switch and Pin-7 mod. I used the lockers way less than I thought I would as well. Needless to say it went everywhere the lifted TJs and JKs went except the small rock garden at the top. There was a bit of ribbing about the street tires on mine and the potential for needing to be tugged around. HAHA Not this time!

The bad thing is I popped a P0401 code while on the trail. Oh well. If that's all I get for now I can deal with it.

Right on way to wheel it stock....
The P401 code is annoying but spend a day testing the three various culprits and replace your hoses. Then order the items that are bad from Cruiser Dan in New Mexico and spend another day replacing them. Much easier the second time taking them in and out. But there is a lot of info on here on replacing these parts without removing the throttle body. Too bad you didn't replace these when you had the whole top off.

I did a chunk of reading on the p0401 and figured I would give it a go with doing a real good clean up in the internals of the EGR stuff. It seemed to work for a couple of days, but that was all. Oh well We'll see where troubleshooting it goes.

A few months back a group of us got together with another member who had defeated the code and he was able to walk all of us through the removal from below and testing. I ended up replacing about 3'-4' of hose and ordered the VSV for EGR and the Vacuum Modulator and I have been code free since I smogged it in September.

Been there done that, replace the EGR's sensors and it worked for a while then got the code again and ended up being the vsv.

Cheers,

Michael

so where's the pics of the run?

For some weird reason i didn't bring my camera, I normally bring it every time I wheel. Since the other guys were 100% j*^p they didn't take any pics of a Land Cruiser in action.

Since the wheeling trip I have did another solid inspection of my vacuum hoses and as when I reinstalled everything they are in way better shape than they should be for 200k on the ODO. All are hooked up correctly too. I have reset the CEL a few times. It looks like the VSV my be DOA! Oh well in a month or so I'll give Dan a call for one.

The one that really bugs me is the damn AirBag light that came on after the first start-up. I have tried the reset procedure to no avail. I only noticed it after I did the CDL switch addition. Maybe I loosened something while I had the dash apart? I donno.

I hear the ledge is getting pretty big on the main climb on Rowher trail. Did you do it?

We did the main trail. It is just steep as a whole on the bouquet side. I didn't see any ledges that I saw to be real big.

OK, maybe it got some maintenance then. In any case I agree that it's pretty dang steep...
