Too far north. Too far east.
I have a 1985 4Runner. Anybody who owns one of these gems knows they are the Holy Grail of 4Runners ... solid axle, efi, removable top. The only year this combo was available from Toyota. Ya, you can EFI a 1984, or SAS a 1987. But the 1985 is the real deal. It's unique. One of a kind.

Own one long enough and you come to realize that Toyota kinda used the year as an experiment. There are several parts on this truck that are 1985 specific, and not used in 1986+. The hoses under the plenum are one example. The TPS and ECU are another.

A few years ago my ECU crapped out, and I went to the boneyard and harvested a computer from a 1986-87 (89661-35070). Rumor had it that this computer would work just fine. It did and I've been running it for several years. But what about the TPS? It changed in 1986 too. Why? And why doesn't Toyota supersede to the '86 TPS?

I ask because recently I built a 2FE for my FJ40. For those of you out of the Land Cruiser world ... that is the head and fuel injection bits off a 3FE (FJ62/FJ80) on top of the long stroke 2F block (FJ60, in my case). The TPS on that engine is the same one used on 86-88 22RE, and a host of other engines from those years (3.slow!). I figured I have the 1986-87 ECU, why not see if the same year TPS would work.

Well, of course it did. Does it work better? I don't know (discussion below). One thing I will note is that the setup for 1985 was to adjust the TPS at 0.0185". On the 3FE it's 0.0366". On the 3.slow I think it was something like 0.0240". Which makes me wonder if it really matters. So I had a feeler gauge for 0.0260" and adjusted it there. Just call me a rebel.

Does it run better with the newer TPS? I really don't know. When I was removing the intake from the TB I found out the rubber hose was trash. And I mean falling-apart-in-pieces trash. So I duct taped it together until I can get another one from Cruiser Dan. In the mean time, engine vacuum went up 2"Hg, and the idle is way smoother. I don't think those had anything to do with the TPS, but more with correcting the serious vacuum leak.

Bottom line, the engine runs damn good. No CEL.

There is one advantage to knowing this. While the cost of a TPS from Toyota will be the same for either one, getting the part aftermarket can save you significant bucks if you go with the 86-88 TPS. Of course, I didn't try the newer TPS with the original ECU, but I suspect it would not matter.

1985 TPS: 89452-20060
1986-88 TPS: 89452-20050

Thanks for the info, pappy. I agree with you about the 85 4Runner. I love mine!
