A first attempt at restoring a 78 FJ40

Check out TPI4x4

Thats where I bought my family length bikini and duster/windjammer (essentially a removable back panel with zip in window).

TPI is where I bought my family bikini top as well.

I found a good deal on a Bestop bikini top and channel on quadratec.com for about the same price as the TPI. If you think they are about the same quality I will go with TPI because they are a CLC preferred vendor. Either way the TPI top won't match the bestop half doors or bestop top won't match the TPI windjammer if I get all of them. I would like to make some 1/2 doors that are the same color as the truck someday. I also found a website toyotacruiserparts.com that I have not seen before.

Never had any Bestop products so I can't compare. The duster is ususlly in the shade of the top and it would probably be hard to see a difference. At least that's the way it is with my full length family top.

Andy,

Take a look at this top at the bottom of this page:

James "Chris" Wade does some AMAZING restorations and always has nice stuff. Might save you a few $$.

Thanks Lash. I have stumbled onto that website before and I didn't know if he was on the up and up. I may have to take some of those parts off his hands. I am tempted to get that softop, but it is the old tigertop so it requires drilling snaps into the body. I am not too keen on that. I would prefer the old school kind with the roll up windows if I went that route. The tiger top also looks a little jeepy.

If you buy anything from Bob at TPI tell him that you are with CLC. Helps to get raffle prizes. Give TPI a chance. I have bought a lot from them over the years.

I am thinking about getting these to tide me over till I do the lift and 33s. Would that be dumb? They are 6 lug so I was hoping to just bolt them up.

no except I had brand new ones I offered your that were ATs that would have lasted longer....but whatever:D you need something for sure

So says the man that has owned many tires!

I ran 33x10.50x15's on my FJ-43 without a lift.

Get the right tire once. Don't screw with this junk.

It may rub a bit but it will be fine for running the roads.

Like that statement.

If 33x10.5s will work without a lift than I will defintely wait. This is why I ask. Thanks

I am a big fan of big tires with no or little lift. I think it looks great with stock lift and 33 skinnies

That 43 was sweet! I would ask why you got rid of it, but that is like asking a bird why it sings. I love the look of the tall skinnies and stock steelies at the natural ride height. Where does everyone find these south american rigs?

This is what I am rockin right now. The fender is cut under the flares, so that is a little extra room. After picking the tire, I have to decide then whether to use the rims I've got and repaint them black, white, or go back to the steelies and hub caps. Decisions, decisions....money and more money.

I might have a couple of stock disk brake steelies in the parts pile. Is there an easy way to tell them apart from drum steelies?

Andy....aint it your b-day? I could "suggest" to Jennifer for you so you can get new tirus.....i like the 33 tall skinnys too

Yep tomorrow I will be the dreaded 30. I was thinking about waiting until after I do the paint so I don't get overspray on dem nice tires.
