Of course I have searched. And there countless threads about speaker replacements, but I yet to find the answer:

A speaker (other than Eclipses) that is a direct fit for the 97 LC front doors (which severely limits speaker options because of the bar that gets in the way.) and can be had for around $50.

I want to keep the stock speaker grills...OEM incognito look.

I will be installing the Pioneers TS-G1041Rs in the rear doors this weekend, and this has been well documented. Thanks Skillet.

Since replacing the tape deck to a Scion unit, the front door speakers sound like crap.

thanks

So the 96 and 97 80 series has the same door limitation?
thanks

6.5" pioneers from the same series as the 1041s fit in my 96. I spaced them out with a bit of foam insulation tape.

From what I have read I think so.

Btw,i did the scion replacement with an 1806 and am pretty happy with the results. Making the dash panel opening bigger was a pain in the ass though

I thought the front speakers were well documented as well?

Anyway, I installed the Pioneer TS-G1643R 6.5" in my '96. The magnet rests against the window channel, but it still fits with some minor modifications (drill new holes) and the OEM speaker panel fits over the top.

Thanks all. I wouln't say the speakers for the front doors on 96 to 97 model years are well documented in threads, because you have to go through several speaker threads, dealing with all 80 series years, then LX450 owners chime in and you get the idea.

I pulled the trigger on the Pioneer TS-G1643R for the front doors. As stated, I should be able to install them with a little bit of customization (size 0 faucet washers like skillet, or yours Jlg32281.)

Rear Doors are done, I added Peel and Seal for extra insulation to the door panel. That stuff sticks pretty good, and has been give the thumbs up by other car forums as another insulation material option. Avalaible in roofing materials, Lowes.

I did my '97 a few weeks back using the latest generation Pioneers, and it was relatively easy. I made it more difficult by trying to add an MDF spacer ring, which ended up being too thick for the speaker covers to fit back on. So I went with steel washers to add a little clearance between the back of the speaker and the window frame inside the door. Reassembly was a little tricky since the washers wanted to fall off as I was screwing the speakers back in. But if you're careful and go slow it should work out fine.

I'd be curious to know if the peel n seal results in an audible improvement. I added some Second Skin Damplifier pro to the inside door skins while I had everything apart, but didn't think about doing the cardboard door panels themselves.

Come to think of it, I didn't do the roll the windows test just to make sure there was no interference of the speaker depth

I hope there isn't. Couldn't say if the extra insulation will provide better acoustics, but it should provide for extra noise reduction.

What is the part number of the speakers you used in the rear doors? Also was there any problem with the window, how about in the front? Thanks

Just a note that the Pioneer TS-G1643R go for $40 at Wal-Mart, that is $10 cheaper then current list price anywhere else.

May 2018. I tackled this project this weekend. The Pioneer TS-G650 2-ways are as close to direct fit as you can get. I used the template on the pioneer box to cut two spacers out of a plastic yard sign. Super easy. You will need (4) #12 1.25” long screws per speaker. Speakers were $50 at bestbuy. Screws were $3.00 at HomeDepot.

You used the existing plug for this speaker no mods to the plug?

Got a pic with the door trim back on?

I also installed the same TS-G1645R speakers in my 97. The front speakers went right in without spacers or washers and does not interfere with the full operation of the window. The bar for the window track is directly behind the speaker, but it did not interfere with the installation at all.

I did have to bend the tabs up in the speakers a bit so that it would fit flush with the contour of the door. Here is a picture with the tabs that need to be bent forward shown in yellow.

I know, I know... relax about the screws. I’m sure after a few years that they’ll vibrate and rip the speaker. When that day comes, I’ll spend another 35 bucks and replace them and use smaller screw heads next time.

Here is a picture with the door cards back on. There is no gaping or other fitment issues.
