I also installed the same TS-G1645R speakers in my 97. The front speakers went right in without spacers or washers and does not interfere with the full operation of the window. The bar for the window track is directly behind the speaker, but it did not interfere with the installation at all.

I did have to bend the tabs up in the speakers a bit so that it would fit flush with the contour of the door. Here is a picture with the tabs that need to be bent forward shown in yellow.

I know, I know... relax about the screws. I’m sure after a few years that they’ll vibrate and rip the speaker. When that day comes, I’ll spend another 35 bucks and replace them and use smaller screw heads next time.

Here is a picture with the door cards back on. There is no gaping or other fitment issues.

Cool thanks, that helps. My Aussie 80 has no speakers in the front doors.

Have you pulled the door card to see what you’re working with? I’m sure the hole is there, but maybe not the harness?

Here is a total view you can use as a reference

The rear door speakers are smaller than the front door speakers. The factory speakers are kind of sealed or glued into a plastic mounting assembly that also has the anchor points for the grill.

In order to use the 6.5 inch pioneer speakers in the rear doors, I had to mount them directly through the outside of the door cards and use the pioneer grills. I did paint them to match the factory interior and to those who don’t know, they look like they’re factory installed. Although, it’s obvious to everyone on this forum that they’re not. Here’s a pic.

If you want to retain the factory grills. I think you could get smaller speakers to fit inside the plastic factory housing and mod it a bit to work. Pry the rear grill off and you’ll see what I mean. I wanted larger speakers, so I opted to use the pioneer grills.

So what’s the verdict on the sound quality of the Pioneers?

A heck of a lot better than factory blown speakers. lol. But in reality I'd say they're a little better than average, they have a little too much bass for my taste. I actually have the bass knob turned down a good bit on my stock LX head unit. Once I upgrade head units I'm sure they'll sound even better. Currently I'd say they're on par with the stock sound systems of today's non-luxury cars.

What was the part number for these speakers and what paint did you use ?? That looks Amazing and to the regular guy it looks STOCK !!!

I absolutely hate them. They are "tinny" and produce no mid or low. I honestly felt my stock speakers were better and wish I never pulled them out. I've been looking for alternatives for a while now, but the stock location makes this difficult. I read through and realized that I had to disconnect the stock tweeters, which I did. Made it a little better, but still not good.

I've installed lots of speakers and head units and these are the worst. I keep going in every 6 months and checking to make sure I didn't do something wrong, but it doesn't seem like it. Maybe I got a bad pair, not sure. Everyone on here seems to love them.

Here is the Amazon link that I used for two pair (4 speakers).

Pioneer TS-G1645R 2-Way 6-1/2" 500 Watt Car Audio Coaxial Speaker (2 Pairs) 6.5" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P9M5Z54/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WDD9AbBTXHPPV

I used SEM I terior paint to spray the covers. You can buy it from Cruiser Corps. Just choose your flavor.

Speakers sound great to me. I did have to pull out the factory amp because mine was blown.

Same here. I put them in a couple months ago and ordered a set of Polk DB 652 yesterday to try as a replacement

They sound awful because they are not an open air speaker design.
You need some baffles to make them perform better.
At the same time, everyone needs to understand those are $25 speakers per pair, not each.

I installed the Polks today in the front doors. They sound MUCH better than the Pioneers. But the install was not as easy and took some modifications. Not as much of a fan of the looks of the Polks either, but whatever.

Now I need to get the 4" for the rears. I started the sub replacement in the back as well today

Question.... did u pull off the back door panel first then the grills?....or can u pop grill off without pulling rear door panels?

and you said you just mounted the 6 1/2" TS-G1645R and bolted speakers on outside of rear door panel?

Thanks, just trying to wrap my head around this ;)

The rear grills pop off without removing the door cards. Just pry them off, you can’t hurt them. Yes, to your second question.

Thanks!

So it sounds like the TS-G1645R magnet fit in rear speaker door opening?...any tips or tricks on the mounting procedure?

Need to order two more 6 1/2" ;)
