First off though I've just joined this forum it has helped me on more than one occasion. There is a lot of knowledge around here!

I've done a search and couldn't find anything specifically addressing what my problem is.

I need some help with my 94 XCab 4wd truck. It's got the two piece rear driveshaft. About month ago it broke at the yoke at the double cardan joint. By the time I got it stopped it had thrown around in the mount, twisting and bending the housing around the joint. The top and bottom parts of the housing have pretty good tears in them.

Of course the top part of the housing also serves as the bracket that holds the center support bearing. Unfortunately that housing is welded to the frame so it's not a bolt on part.

Here's a picture:

So the options are:

--Try to bend the housing and weld the tear, replace the center support bearing and get another driveshaft. Again, the mount is torqued pretty badly.

--Cut a housing off a junked vehicle and weld onto my truck, then replace center support bearing and shaft. This would likely shift the geometry a little, but not much. In cutting the housing off a donor vehicle you'd lose the flange that is welded to the frame.

--Replace the whole affair with a one piece driveshaft. This would be the easiest thing to do, but I'm not sure how much it would cost and if the cost would be worth it. Has anyone had a driveshaft made up like this? What was the approximate cost? I'd prefer this route but given the age of the truck cost is a consideration.

This is a standard truck, no lift or any other mods to the drivetrain.

Thanks very much for any help or advice you can give.

Sounds like a perfect excuse for dual t-case. Shorter rear, longer front. On a serious note, I fixed a similar problem on a friend's truck by cutting a donor truck, worked fine. My local driveline shop would probably charge me about $150-$180 to make the one piece shaft if I brought him the yokes from the old one.

Thanks, Dirtpoor. I hope I can get it done for that. I had the impression it would be good deal more to have a DS put together but if it's less than $200 it's a no brainer.

One of the yokes of course is broken, but I can come up with something.

I'm in the Kennesaw, Georgia area if somebody knows who does good work like this around here.

Thanks again!

I agree with the one piece driveshaft ... after the dual case. That is exactly what I did to my 85 xcab. Even without the dual case I would have a one piece shaft made from your bits.

For all the work that cutting off a boneyard part would take I would gamble and go to the dealer. Sometimes those parts are available as a separate item, even though they are welded to the frame. Spring mounts come to mind. Clean up that part and see if it's stitched welded, or spot welded.

Thanks for the help, gents. My preference would be to go with a one piece shaft, if I can find someone around here to do it reasonably.

Jgrant, I'm not sure what caused it to fail.

Look up ACC in ATL. They are the go-to guys for cruisers and most thingsw Toyota in the metro area. If they can't make you one I am confident they will recommend a top notch shop to do so.
