Just picked up my first Toyota PU. Nice to have a manual again. It came with a nice feature in that the muffler is coming apart and rattles like crazy. I was surprised to find that Walker offers their QuietFlow Stainless (low grade stainless, I'm sure) mufflers with tailpipes in the following 3 configurations for the 22RE:

2WD, regular cab
2WD, extended cab
4WD, regular cab

But no 4WD Extended cab! They do offer a separate economy muffler and a separate tailpipe, but I'd prefer something that will last a bit longer and may be quieter. They also offer a muffler/tailpipe assembly for the 3.0, 4WD Extended cab. So my questions are:

1- Can I use the 3.0 Exhaust system? It is 2" pipe vs the 1.75" pipe on the 22RE, but I can slap a reducer/expander in there and be done. This uses a slightly larger muffler (7" diameter vs 6"), and I'm leaning towards this option. I have to believe that the tailpipes are the same between 22RE and 3.0 (only the 3.0 is 2" pipe).
2- are the tailpipes really different between 2WD and 4WD?
3- should I just drop it at exhaust shop, pay $300 for an aluminized, technician special?

Why not just go to an exhaust shop and have them weld in whatever muffler you would like? Just buy a universal muffler that is around the same dimensions of your current muffler.
Thanks. That is option 3. And may be the path I end up taking. Was just surprised that so many pre-built systems exist that would be simple and cheaper - just not for a 22RE with 4WD and extended cab.

I ordered the cat-back system for a 3.0 truck and will post pics and the results here.

This replacement exhaust is Walker 47716 for use on a pickup w 3.0, 4wd, and extended cab. The main difference from the 22RE seems to be that this muffler is larger and the pipe size is 2” vs the 1.75” on the 22RE.

Should have all the parts by the weekend and will close the loop here (success or failure) in case it helps others in the future.

I don't see why that can't work. Even if you need a muffler shop to make the adaption to your truck.

Walker 47716 for 3.0 pickup, extended cab, 4wd. Compared to stock pipes (PO muffler replacement) from 22RE, extended cab, 4wd.

Note that Walker has same flange at cat, but has larger pipes and larger muffler. I got excited and thought it would bolt up, but it’s about 6” too short.

I used the adapter that I had ordered, but ideally, you’d use the new flange and just have a shop weld in a 2” pipe extension. Which I plan to do. Cleaner installation without these clamps.

I think the issue you had is the difference in catalytic converter lengths. The 22re will have a 12.5" catalytic converter whereas the 3vze will have a 17.5"
