I'm dealing with this now. My first oil change on this 80. Tried 3 FLAPS yesterday to find a socket style wrench that fit with no luck. That thing is on there tight.

These are the oil filter wrenches I use. Use them with a 6" extension and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Remove the 3 bolts on the PS reservoir and push it out of the way, then you have much better access to the oil filter.

The smaller size wrench is first for the small filter. The second one is for the large filter.

So I had a shaky side view mirror, but it wasn't that big a deal and so I've been ignoring it. Apparently that was the wrong approach and the 80 let me know about it. Mom and I jumped in yesterday to run a few errands and how about a floppy side view mirror? That's a new one. Now the entire body of the mirror just swings back and forth in the breeze, no resistance whatsoever. I swear it was fine the last time I drove it about a week ago, really weird. Now I get to disassemble the whole mirror and figure out just what the heck happened. Big family gathering today, so I probably won't get to it, but hopefully this week sometime because having that mirror just swing around really sucks.

Well whaddaya know. Is there anything @NLXTACY doesn't make? Doing some digging on this now, looks like there are el cheapo fixes, and real fixes. As soon as I can get some garage time, I'll see what's what.

I finally got into the garage and completed a project that's been on the workbench for a long time. Trail lights. These are from Extreme LED and are a dual function light, both white and amber.

It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to mount them, but I finally came up with a good solution. I couldn't use the lower tabs on the ARB bumper because the left side was cut off to make room for the Warn controller. So it had to be the upper tabs, and finally the solution presented itself. I found a 2" C-channel piece at Home Depot, and with a little trimming, drilling and painting, I finally had the mount that I wanted.

They came with a full harness, relays and switches already wired up. That made it relatively easy to get everything done, but it still took a while. The switches that they came with are the round lighted switches, and they just don't fit in the blanks on the dash. So I ordered a couple of switches from MicTuning that were just a bit larger than the blanks. The connectors they came with were too large to fit the wiring harness setup, so I had to cut them off and fit new connectors everywhere. Then a little work with the Dremel and they fit just perfectly.

These lights are dual, white and amber, so I wired up the white lights to the Driving Lights switch and the amber to the Fog Lights Switch. Really happy with the final result.

Been a while since I posted, but hey it's winter and business has been crazy. I've had a transmission problem for a while now, lost 2nd gear. I checked the electrical stuff and couldn't find a problem, so then I replaced the three solenoids. Still no gear. Drives perfectly in all gears except 2nd. With work burning all my time, I gave up. I just dropped the truck off at ACC Garage here in the Atlanta area. In the time it took me to drive home, they have already run the diagnostics and basically agreed with me, something inside the transmission ain't doing its job. They will be digging deeper on Monday. Oh boy.

Looking forward to the diagnosis and repair. We’ve got a meet up in August with @Dilspec

Darn right we do, and Daniel and I will be there. Hell my brother is coming up to visit in three weeks, and he wants to go camping/fishing in the Appalachians. So I hope to be mobile a lot quicker than that. Best case, it's an easy fix and I'll have some more upgrades ready for SAS4. Worst case, I'll have a rebuilt transmission at SAS4. Either way, I'm there.

Well the verdict is in and it's transmission rebuild time. Apparently a broken sprag which means getting to the heart of it, and since everything will be open it only makes sense to rebuild it completely. The guys at ACC said this was the first broken transmission they have ever seen and only the second one they have had to rebuild - the first was just because the engine was being rebuilt and the owner wanted everything perfect.

I suppose 175k miles in a turbocharged truck says a lot for how strong these transmissions are. And once it's done, I'll never have to touch it again (knock on wood).

Just got the word my truck is ready! Fully rebuilt transmission, ready for another 175k at least. Due to schedule I can't pick it up until Monday afternoon, but I'll post the rest of the details once I have it back home.

Man, this would be a perfect weekend to head into the Appalachians. Oh well, maybe next weekend.

So yours had the turbo on it from new? I guess mine only has about 110,000 miles on the turbo.

Yes it was built in late 97 so at most there was a couple thousand miles on the truck when it was built. Safari turbo, ARB front bumper and Warn winch, ARB drawers, Kaymar rear bumper, lots of other stuff. Supposedly a west coast dealer built several of these when they were new in collaboration with ARB. Given how long it's been turbocharged, having to rebuild the transmission at 175k miles is pretty damn good. Sorta sucks it happened on my watch, but you know that's ok. And I'll probably never have to touch it again.

Nice to see up and going so quickly. On the plus you did miss the turbo rebuild. Also glad it happened close to home. You have been to a lot of remote places in the last year plus.

Very true! That turbo rebuild invoice was serious. And you're right, the truck has been bulletproof on all the long trips, and with more coming soon the fact it happened at home is a big plus. This weekend is so nice, but hopefully I'll get it out somewhere next weekend.

Got the cruiser back home! Transmission fully rebuilt, all wear items are new. The word from the shop was that the 2nd gear clutch was "totally gone" and the others were "marginal" which after 175k miles behind a turbo engine is pretty good. The gears were in excellent shape which is also good news. Like I said before, this was only the second 80 transmission they have ever rebuilt, and the first that really had a failure. So if you're ever wondering about how over-built Toyota made this thing, there's your answer. I'd say if a turbo lasted 175k, then a stock one is good basically forever.

And it drives so much better. Where it shifted kinda hard before, shifts are buttery smooth now. And I swear it accelerates harder than before, much harder. I'm wondering if it's been slipping a long time. In any case, I'm really happy to have it back and driving so nicely.

Hope everyone is doing well and finding garage projects to keep you busy!
