Never in my 20 years of Toyota experience (not as a pro mechanic ) have I seen a keyed drive shaft spline.

I've asked all my Toyota buddies & all said the same thing.

That front d-shaft has had to have been changed/rigged up at some point

Well one thing is 4 sure. I cant argue that. Is the first yota shaft Ive ever had out. This one is... Will only go together one way. Has one odd spline. Dont know what they did or why they did it. I have a guy on here gonna sell me a used one. Will make me feel better!. In my case...if it can it will. And it freakin did.

Sounds like it may be a good idea to put match marks on all my Toyota drive shafts so if I do pop them apart at some point I can put them back together right.

If you are OK at preschool games than its easy.

Both ends need to be the same.

If you sit the shaft on a table and it rocks then its not straight.

It should sit on a table or bench with the flange holes touching at both ends. If one corner is off the table or bench its off a spline or more.

Its as easy as putting on socks. Ya dont put them on sideways with the toe seam crooked do ya? If ya can tell if your socks are straight them you too can master the driveline.

I'm assuming you don't have alot of friends...

Seriously, you do offer some solid tech info, and solid insights; but sometimes man, get down of that high f:censor:ing horse and play at being civil!

Thanks for the offer but I just dont need a hug. :meh:

I guess I could hang out in chat and offer nothing at all as far as tech is concerned.

One thing I hate Chuck is folks that offer up advice that they "think" is good but in reality have never ever seen/touched/experienced.

The other thing that drives me bonkers is when it CLEARLY explained how to fix it with a cheap and safe way that is perfectly OK and accepted and the OP continues to just make it complicated.

99 percent of the time I offer advice on something its because I deal with it DAILY. Not read about it twice and well "just figured".

This is a tech area for info. I offered advice to folks that need it. If you cant handle a little sarcasm on the web then the repair shop charges 70-90 an hour to answer questions.

Chop Shop...sarcasm on the net and simply being an a$$ are two completely different things. I'm not some broke punk who has to do what is cheap and simpe safe. I prefer to do things RIGHT while still not throwing money away. Therefore not over spending NOR having something rigged together with the possiblilty of having to wrench on the same thing again. Actually I have probably worked on more trucks than you have. Just not Toyotas. Trust me I'm NOt some 16 year old with a paper route for income and no experience working with my hands.

With that said.....

2ndGenToyotaFan, I have a guy that syas he has what I need. Wish I could lay my eyes on it to be sure. We just have to work out a way to get him paid as I don't use Pay Pal. They got me for a grand a cpl years ago and I just don't use them anymore. I understand how handy they are but after loosing $1000 due to their "ruling" I don't use them any more. I understand his fear of not getting paid and I think he understands my fear od the shaft possibly being not the one I need. Such is the net. It's the nature of the beast. Like I told him....I'd send CASH if I was sure it was the right shaft. I don't want to have to take it out again to measure it but may freaking have to.

SNAFU

Just measure the difference, flange-to-flange from t-case to diff. Have the seller do the same with his DS, and compare notes. That's how I got my own used driveshaft, bolted right up.

As to payment: talk to your bank, I'm sure they have arrangements with their cashier's checks that can cancel the transfer on the grounds the end-result between you and the seller is not satisfactory.

I think this is where you confused me.

Carry on.:crybaby:

I guess I can see what you mean.. I shoulda said what is the cheapest route to do it RIGHT.

For example. I called around this AM to find the RIGHT alternator for the truck I wanted the BEST PRICE but I didnt want a USED alternator either. Just the cheapest I could get away with but yet still fixing it RIGHT.

Parts for Toyotas are like parts for John Deeres [which I also am partial to] they are 3 times the price that mos tother makes are....BUT....seldom do you have to buy them.

Gonna go install the 'nater and then get back to the shaft fiasco. The guy wants me to call him so I am sure we are going to get together on the drive shaft. I am not worried about him trying to take me really. It is just that if it doesn't fit right I will be stuck with a shaft that is worthless to me. As heavy and bulky as they are, I am sure shipping it back would be costly in its self.

I also understand his point. There are those who would try and take him. Unfortunately there are a$$es that would not pay for goods at any time they had a chance.

I am NOT that way and I don't think this guy is either in any way shape or form. I think he is trying to sell me the correct thing for a fair price.

If I get something I will pay for it. I don't expect something for nothing. Again, there are those that do. Karma is a bitch and they will end up paying more in the end. Personally I HATE a theif and a liar. The make it tuff on honest folk.

The $1000 loss I took using Pay Pal over a hunting dog just made me totally against Pay Pal. They just decided I was not telling the truth and he was. Well they were wrong. So he got a $3500 dog for $2500 and I hope she bites him in the balls repeatedly.

Nuff ranting. I have a Toyota in the drive that needs an alternator put in. I should go ahead and put new belts on while I am doing it but that will be a project for the summer, I hope.

So have a nice day!

:grinpimp:

if you can't use it, sell it to someone else, there will always be a market for mini truck parts.

Shoot, I have never once heard of anybody having to rebuild a Toyota Cardan Joint - U-joints come and go, but I know 40+ year-old 40's that still run their original DS - Are you sure your pinion bearings are fine? I'd think they'd fail long before anything else.

I stand corrected. Thursday morning, The Mule's front CV failed and bound up on highway 29, and tore the nose off my t-case.

It was really wet, and really windy, and my featherweight truck is simply too risky at speed; I had my hubs locked, in case I needed to quickly drop into 4Hi, picked up a weird vibe up front, and before I'd made it to the shoulder, BANG! The t-case tore off, and dented up the passenger-side floor pan on it's way out into space.

I limped her off to a safe location, and had The Mule towed to Yodaman. They'll look her over Monday and tell me if anything else is afoul.

These things do fail!

That's what you get for making ultimatums... :D

Seriously. Talk about open mouth, insert foot!:frown:

Bummer though... Had you greased it recently?
Not recently. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the only neglected Zerk, too!
The real kicker: is I just got her back from the shop not 48 hours earlier after a bad t-case end u-joint on my rear DS, and dead clutch hydraulics that blew up on 101 North near Geyserville.

FWIW those 48 hours had the best feel and handling that truck's ever had!

Larry won't be able to get her up on the rack until Monday, and I'm sweating bullets if anything else died in the bang, too.
Oil pan looks kosher from the side of the road, and the pinion felt firm, but I'm worried about damage to the transmission. If the L52's housing is shot, I doubt I could source another easily - meaning a rushed upgrade to a W56!:grinpimp:

I'm looking for the silver lining...

But it's worth saying: If you're in the North Bay, CA, Yodaman's the best place to go with your pickup, these guys do great work, and have cut me some great deals since the moment they caught me drooling over The Mule.

It may not fit but you might try a flat rate box from the postal. They are 5" high and I think ?x12 if I remember right. If you pulled the dline apart and angled the CV it might fit for the everday low price of 15 bucks shipping.... it is heavy enough I wouldnt want to pay for shipping through USPS I would head for UPS.......

Crud I just looked it back up and I think the largest box is a 12x12x5.5" That is most likely not going to fit. I would have sworn the box was larger as I just mailed a turbo 350 to 21 spline toyota tcase adapter in one!

Sorry

No camera on-hand at the time, and I can't figure out the camera in my stupid phone, much less how to get them onto any legitimate electronic device, like a computer. However, if the kind folks of Team Yodaman give me a chance to view the carnage, I'll post up.

I have not been able to find either the DS, or the nose of the t-case. They flew off fast enough to dent in my floorpan, and bounced out into a vineyard, and I haven't been able to find them. There's a stub of the u-joint left on the pinion, the transfer gear out in dead space, and the speedo cable dangling.
