I'm working on an 89 4Runner with a 22RE-C (California emissions) with a 5 speed.

We just changed the head gasket, timing chain etc, had the whole thing apart obviously. Got it all back together and it runs fine while cold, but once up to operating temp it stumbles and dies, will not idle.

We've checked the valve clearance while hot, and have double checked all the vacuum lines (this does not rule out that being a problem...)

The engine had some issues before all this work, it was eating rocker arms and it's cam shaft, so it's been way down on power for a while IE: this issue may not be related to the work we just did... We're thinking maybe a clogged cat? But would that make it run ok when cold?

Anyone have an idea about what could be causing this? The help would be much appreciated!!!!

No, it's a stock head, we just put a new cam and rockers in it, and cleaned up the valves.

I had an epiphany last night, I think it's an injector wiring problem. When cold there was a slight stumble, but it ran ok... once warm (and the cold start injector turned off) it would not idle at all... I think our messing with the wiring probably broke, or at least compromised one of the crimp connectors that feed the injectors.... So we're going to go test the wires, and the grounds. Wish us luck!

We figured it out! :D I put the distributor on one tooth off, which wasn't helping... and I think we may have had an air leak in the intake boots, also my fault... Word to the wise; don't do a bunch of engine work then fire it up if you don't have a timing gun to make sure every thing is good....

Thanks for the ideas!

Funny I should read this now.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has done that. Also, my lack of timing lights (mine are all diesels, remember) didn't help at all. ;)

My problem was I pointed the rotor at the rubber plug in the dist housing, not at the electrical connector clip (which lines up with the #1) on the outside of the housing... All's well, it's running well and home safe now! :D

2ndGenToyotaFan,
This is why you have the info I need to know. This is very similar to my problem. I will have to check my timing tonight. Thanks, for your posting and help.
