I need help, I can't figure out the problem and would like some feed back. I recently put a new engine in the truck due to a blown head gasket. The truck did the se thing with the old engine. First it will idle ruff from time to time (like it has a miss). Second when trying maintain a steady speed the truck pulsate. No
Problem when I give it full throttle. Third is after driving for a while and try to restart the truck it just turns over, if I spray carb cleaner into the throttle body it fires right up.
I have changed injectors sensors ( except throttle position censor). Checked for vacuum leaks, even a new ecu. Please let me know if you cam help. Thanks.

This sounds a lot like the problem I had. Fuel pump. Hard to start when warm, and when it did get going it was very unhappy. It would also buck under load due to the lean condition. I would go with a Denso or Aisin. You can get them aftermarket for about $130. Dealer will set you back over $300.

If you have a 4R you can access the pump through a hole under the back seat. If you have a PU, you need to drop the tank or remove the bed.

A while back I had the same problem it turned out tank was rusted badly replace tank and fuel pump the problem was gone. I recommend you run an injector cleaner 3M frosm car quest. You connect the system straight from the can with a special hose that fits into the can to the fuel line let the truck run from the tank until it empties the can.

There is also the possibility that the mechanical gate in the air filtter box is not working properly it will give problems to the truck for idling. I had that problem before. You do not give proper description of the problem so these are merely suggestions. Here one assumes you have checked your spark plugs and wires. BTW a weak ingnition coil will also make the truck misfire and chuggle as it tries to accelerate.

I had the pump pressure tested and was told it was fine, but at this point I am willing to try any thing. Thanks for the help.

I mystyped my comments. To run the injector cleaner you connect the hose for the can to the fuel line and disconnect the fuel pump at the tank so it will not try to run. If your truck was not running for a while I suspect the old gas has become gunky and is actually clogging the injectors, in the extreme it can actually get the valves stuck.
I also assume you have checked for engine codes in the computer diagnostics. Do not blame the ECU they are very reliable and rarely fail. If none of these tips solve your problem try to be more specific on what the truck does and what you have done.

Sorry for the improper description but this is what the truck is doing. I am going to try replacing the tank. Thanks for the help.

The truck sat for several years and would not run when I got it. I got it running after replacing the fuel pump. How ever the tank had a lot of dried gas almost a powder form I cleaned it the best I could and got about 20,000 miles with the engine running well except for a ruff idle that was not always consistent. The truck would heststate as I was excelerating. It blue a head gasket and replaced the engine with, new injectors, sensors new mass air flow new cap and rotor new ecu and much more. After all of that the same problems plus now after running for a while it won't start unless I let it sit for 20
Minutes or using carb cleaner into the throttle body. I have not changed the coil or the gas tank, but sounds like a good place to start.

If the tank is not too rusty it can be cleaned. Several options. A radiator shop should be able to clean it. Or, there are kits out there that work well. POR and Eastwood both have options. I've used both with good success on old tractor gas tanks (70yo and 65yo).

Also when you clean or replace your tank, clean or replace your fuel lines and replace your fuel filter. I am sure that it is very dirty from having all that debris pushed through it. It should be around $15.

I diverge about having the tanks cleaned because once the finish is removed in the cleaning process it is a matter of time before the tank will rust again. There is a process where some shops protect the tank surface with some kind of plastic finish that may last longer. I had that done to my scooter's tank.
If the same problem persist after replacing many parts I suggest you focus on the parts that you did not replace. When I suggested the coil I actually intended to refer to the whole igniter assembly. I also suggested you looked into the air gate for the air box. This a mechanical gate that measures the incoming air into the engine underneath the air flow sensor. I had one case where a 4runner would act up and failed emissions. Took the thing out and compare to another I had and could tell it was sticking open. Also if you have not replaced the pcv valve do so as its performance affects idling and start up. Note that the things I am refering to may not trigger the check engine light.
The fact that you can start it with carb cleaner seems to suggest that your injectors are not releasing the fuel when they should or release less than the optimal amount. I would also recommend replacing your fuel filter and inspect it for excessive traces of dirt/rust. Also inspect your plugs you will be surprised how far dirt can travel. I had my valves sticking because I did not inspect my tank.
The 3M injector cleaner I recommended is very handy in isolating this starting problem. It will clean your injectors and if the problem persists while the truck is running from the 3M can ($20, www.carquest) then you will know the problem is not the injectors.
