just bought 85 4 runner w/22re it started sputtering so i gave it a tune up . plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil. timed it and timing was anvanced off the gauge even when shorted. set it to 5' btdc it idled but wouldnt drive . when i shorted the plug no change in advance. set it back to where the previous owner had it advanced off the gauge . still sputters but only when i use an excessary like the wipers. any ideas

sounds like your ignition timing is off by a tooth on the distributor. Best way to set IGNITION timing is to bring engine to TDC on the compression stroke and reinsert the dizzy correctly.

Ironically, they're lots of good videos on youtube on how to set ignitioin timing on a 22re. Search a bit.

I agree it could be dizzy timing.

It could also be your throttle position sensor is no good.

Any time you get rough running conditions on a 22re, especially if they are intermittent, take a look at all of the connections from the throttle body to the airbox. The rubber connectors on the tube tend to get brittle and crack, and you get air into the intake that didn't go through the MAF, thus your mixture is way off.

Good luck.
