Body Work

I had to hammer out some dents on the front valence, nothing special, just a little easy banging. Before pic:

I finished the passenger front fender too. It had the start of the long dent. I pounded it out from behind with hammer and dolly. Then I welded shut the snake blinder holes.

After dent removal:

I fixed up the driver's fender too. I welded the snake blinder holes shut, beat out a small dent and then ground out another 5lbs of bondo from the PO's accident. They only used that much bondo as they were too lazy to remove the fender and beat the dent out from the inside .

Body Work

I finished up the underside of the body as well. I had a few rust holes on the driver's side, inside the rocker panel. I cut out two pieces and welded in patches.

One of the roof supports had come un-attached from the roof. I pulled of the support down (after three drilled out bolts ), cleaned up the roof and support, then put a quick coat of spray paint on both. I will get some more double sided tape and bolts and re-attach this week.

Last thing I did was wire wheel out a bunch of seam sealer. The drip rail looks good, luckily I have no rust in the roof. It went quick, but made a HUGE mess. Looked like silly string.

I'll be ordering paint this week, most likely a color of white. I know its not original, but I want something that will make it easy to hide imperfections.

This truck is going to be incredible.

I need to do the same type of repair on my front fender. Thanks for the info!

Most would fine a perfect panel and replace... expecially doors and fenders.....

But I'm sure putting the time and effort to fix everything is much more rewarding in the long run! You are very insperational.

I think the real problem is that I am SUPER CHEAP! But hey, if I wasn't, I wouldn't be this far along.

PS - I did order paint for the rig. I should start throwing down epoxy, 2k primer and single stage urethane over the next month or as soon as it warms up enough.

Stay tuned for the color! ;)

You and Skinner should receive some type of award from Toyota HQ in Japan. Truly incredible commitment. Their Vehicle Archive Department should bow down and kiss your feet.

Can't wait for color data....

I haven't read the whole thread, maybe I have in chunks....

But I'm going to guess either Rootbeer or Smurf

No...wait...given the interior fabric, I'll go with something like Smokey Mtns. Gun Metal

Lack of Progress

Where you at brother? How's your resto going?

Sorry for lack of progress lately... I have spent the last month doing a bathroom remodel for the wife!

I just started cleaning up the garage last night to start the painting, hope to have it painted by June.

I am going to pick up a complete TBI 350 on Saturday, so I'll post pics this weekend.

Painting

The inner fender wells and radiator support wasn't prepped, but was by far the easiest to start with as they didn't need filler.

Parts DA'd w/ 80 grit, washed, hung and epoxy primered:

Turned out well... yes white it is:

Epoxy turned out well, but I did get a run in the single stage white... need to put it on with a lighter touch:

That white looks great!!

Thanks! As I said, cheap and easy. White should hide all my flaws better and it looks good so far.

Looking good, man! Are you going to spray the entire truck in single stage? Or will you base/clear?

I am going to do the entire thing in single stage... I may regret it. It does appear to be harder to work with. I have sprayed PPG base/clear and I must admit it is easier to spray the base, spray the clear and fix the clear if needed.

Looking good! Let me know if you need any additional manual labor, I'm right down the road!

I've been following along from the beginning - great work.
I think I understand your decision to go with the 350 -
but I must confess, I'm also a little disappointed.

I was hoping to see it go back stock - maybe with toyota-based upgrades - 3F head, H55, etc
But I won't abandon this project - keep it up!
