Going to be picking up this 82 4x4 on the 5th of April. Owner who is a mud member tells me it runs but has sat for over a year. Also included in the sale is another cab, doors and fenders to swap out so that it is not so rough. Hoping to swap everything out, baseline the truck and hopefully sell it to fund my fj60 but who knows what will happen!

1st question? Do I need to pull the motor in order to swap the cab? Never done this before.

1st question? Do I need to pull the motor in order to swap the cab? Never done this before.

Nah. It might make things easier to work around but not necessary. Just pull fenders and unhook the few wires and steering and you should be able to lift it straight off. Bout like a 40 tub only should be a little easier to handle.

Got it home today. Got it off the trailer, filled up the radiator. Checked the oil, splashed some gas in the carb and it started right up! The title is from the original owner at 15miles on it. Curently 125,000 and some change. Hoping to get it going fairly soon! 1st hurdle is going to be gas tank. It is sitting in the passenger seat!

Can anyone tell me what size bolts I need for the door hinges?

Are the 82's the same size as an 89's door hinge bolts? I so I can check tomorrow on my truck.

No idea this is the 1st one i have ever owned.

Changed the gas filter and started it up. It will not idle on its own power so I have ordered a carb rebuild kit. Going to get it rebuilt and hope for the best. I did drive it about 15ft or so which is a good sign.

Does the carb have an electronic fuel cylinoid? May be why its not idling.

Yes, you can definitely lift the cab off over the engine, as long as you have enough height in your garage. That's how they were assembled at the factory. I put my freshly painted cab back on over the engine/drivetrain, I used my engine crane.

Door hinge bolts should be M8's.

Sweet! Will hit the hardware store in the morning.

There is an electric solenoid that screws into the carb and has 2 wires coming off of it. They are bad about losing ground. Apply ground to them one at a time and see if the idle smooths out. There is also a temp controlled valve on some of the older ones which most people bypass. Either way, correct adjustment on the carb and idle solenoid grounded and you should be in business.

Thanks for the response. Will look 1st thing in the morning.

Got it to idle on its own power. Of course as soon as I put it in gear it died and will not restart but progress is progress. Was a wire that was not connected. Going to get the doors on this weekend and hopefully figure it out.

Sorry, haven't had internet bolts are M8x1.25.

Ok got it to turn over again. Bad wiring. When i turn the key off the electronic in dash is still on. Need a new switch?

Also got to check the brakes. Act like they are locked down. Even at 3000 rpm when i let the clutch out it acts like there is drag and it dies.

If it's been sitting a long time the brakes are probably rusty. Also the bearings may be binding.

The wiring is probably going to be a nightmare. Mine was so horribly hacked and shorted out everywhere I ended up rebuilding the entire harness to the rear lights. When I did the swap I replaced all the harnesses inside the truck and in the engine compartment with the 22RE harnesses out of the donor 4Runner. So basically retained none of the factory wiring.

Mine had a similar problem with the dash lights and the ignition switch. When the key was in the ignition the dash lights and parking lights were on all the time. We actually ran a new wire for the light switch and cut one out of the old harness. I don't remember which one of course.

Did you say the gas tank was out of it? Had it already been cleaned and coated? Is it possible the trans/transfer are binding?

The tank is currently out of it. Not sure if i will have it treated and reinstalled or run an aftermarket fuel cell.

Not sure about transfer case but one of the rear brakes was locked down when i bought it so that is my 1st assumption. Case and transmission shift easy enough.
