80 vs 100

Buy the 100 if you want to wear a dress or if it's fo the wife. If you plan on wheeling it, then it's quite obvious you'd want the highly superior 80.

well then, what are you doing here, where real men own real rigs, eh? :D

Eric-this is dangerous territory. I seem to recall Doug driving you all over Moab, Golden Spike and Hell's Revenge, while your "manly rig" posed full time in the campground. :D

I have to give props to Shotts though. He drove that 100 series himself through Golden Spike and took his chances. The only funny part was his wife taking pics of him posing his rig on every bump. Good job in my opinion and a great recovery from his breakdown in the campground.

Ace: I agree with your statements but do not on your approach to someone who is new. He might not even know what the search button is for or how to use it.

Damn, shotts is still not here.... Is he OK...I mean really?

i'll admit it... i'm getting crotchety in my advanced age. but i think that every auto-related bulletin board in existance has a search function. this is one of the better ones out there, so yes, i would expect a new user to be familiar with etiquette and the vernacular of a site (unless, of course, it's a mechanical emergency) before they go diving in head first.

i really enjoy this site because of the knowledge that gets passed along in a manner that is not all-consuming. there isn't alot of junk (no pun intended) and i think that's what keeps the technical and fringe discussions from being overrun. the atmosphere is business-casual (in dress code terms) and the more it swings toward flip flops and torn jeans, the worse off the users are. i frequent other auto site and none are as focused and free of "mine is longer than yours" than this one.

well, see that's the point. Had to leave the 80 there cuz I left the *real man*'s rig at home :D (for the wife to drive, hmmm.... :whoops: )
Besides, I wasn't posing it, I was hiding it... stock little wussy affair.....

:D :D

Some of us enjoyed those pictures. I only wish she took more:D

Yep...and you woulda been left behind :flipoff2:

I had no problem with the posing. I remember doing it myself last year. It's exciting when you first hit the trail. I recall a certain very happy 80 series owner (whom I will leave unnamed) who kept stating over the CB, "This is the best wheeling I've done!" and "Oh man, this is awesome!"

That said...I also know that some people we're not too thrilled with all the stops for shots (heh...look a pun :D)...but that's his problem...once he made his way to the front of the line, he seemed happier.

Back on subject...
The 100 is very capable. The 80 is very capable. If a person can afford a 100 series and build it up (if he/she so desires), it makes a plenty capable trail rig, IMO.

Schotts,

I was at work remember? So thank your better half for taking all those great pics. I loved them!

So yea, you really can't go wrong with either vehicle. Check a couple out, and buy what you like.

I didn't mind the posing either, I would have done the same in the circumstances. I remember two complainers, one in a certain white, right hand drive short wheel base Cruiser with non-spark ignition. The other will remain a secret. I love that trail, it just keeps coming at you.

Shotts-Do you have any pics of that little crack just after Launch Pad, where the Jeep almost rolled and we all got air under the driver front? I felt nearly vertical there and your 100 WAS vertical there. It should have made for some good pics.

From seeing both sides of the arguement amongst several cruiser groups, this is what I kind of have determined:

80 series is smaller, therefore can trail better in that respect due to size, and can be built up better/cheaper
100 series is much larger and more comfortable, and has a V8. If cost isn't an issue, can be built up as well.
40 series has proven for 45 years it is the best, and is far superior to both of the above mentioned series :flipoff2: :grinpimp: :flipoff2:

In many ways this is true. The 40 is a better wheeler most of the time. However, imagine driving 900 miles to Cruise Moab with camping gear, food, and everything you need for the trip. Then wheeling 4-5 hard trails, one of them in the rain, then driving 950 miles home in one day, and decide which vehicle you would rather have for the whole trip. Hint: The 40 is not it. I'm about done after 3 hours on the highway in the 40, but the 80 I could drive all day, and have.

The original question, 80 vs. 100 is harder. The 80 is a tougher truck, and easier to make trail ready. The 100 may be a bit more comfy than an 80, however, the 80 has plenty of comfort and plenty of power already. The 100 is more of the same with even more power, but a weaker front end. Like I said, a tough call. All of the merits of both rigs have been hashed out here in great detail previously. In the end, you have to run what you have, and take your lumps. I havn't driven a Cruiser yet that I didn't like.

I'll take a '97 FZJ80 with 45K miles and a '98 UZJ100 with 36K miles. Where I can find them? :D
If I do....the 80 is my DD and the 100 is my trail project. :)

Just make sure, if you decide on the 80, to either have a 100 and a trailer to tow the 80 to the trails...or plan on moving to the trails...or drop in some hp :flipoff2:

1000 miles to the trailhead is a long way, and you definitely want to be comfortable (not only yourself, but the 2nd seat passengers..ie, rear AC). Otherwise, by the time you arrive, you'll be too tired to drive the trails!

I'd say either the 100 or deluxe motor coach/rv w/ the 40 in tow on a trailer.

Heh heh.

I've looked at both, and I'd say go with a later model 80 series. They are quite comfortable, smaller so they can fit places a 100 can't, and can be built up cheaper and more readily. 100 are nice though, but I'm sold on the 80 series.

Oh, yeah, btw, we had a thread on driving long distances in a 40. Most of us would, hands down! :flipoff2:

Read me!

For the not-so-die-hard, an 80 or 100 would be a much better choice for comfort, since the modern Land Cruiser is quite the luxury/comfort rig. I'll stick with my 40 for off road and my Buick for luxury/comfort!!
