Shotts is right, if you look at Slee's site for instance, an ARB front bumper, Slee rear bumper, stanard OME suspension, and sliders for an 80 or a 100 is less than $500 difference. Winch, tires, etc. are going to be the same on both.

Both truck have great pedigrees and can give you great service. I personally think it boils done to if and what you can afford, what you do with the truck and if you care if you dent the body some. Typically the less you have spent, the easier it is to take into the woods an scratch up on a camping trip or dent when wheeling(usually after the first dent it is easier on the mind). There is much I like about both trucks and want a 100 in the future when we can afford it. But my 80 servies my family well. Look at the differences in Slees site, newbie section and discussions on Mud over the last year and you can get some great information(filter out the BS and overzelous statement) on the various years and the different options that were inculded in different years. Buy what you can afford and build it accordingly and have fun.
Even Actionjackson did not trailer his 80 with 40" MTR's out to moab, i talked with him on sunday when I arrived and he had a great time with is friends doing some trails. No need to trailer it, better ride than a 40 series, 60 series on similar tires, but it would be tough to fit 40" MTR on a 100 with out doing a soild axle in front. later robbie

Robbie,
Well put, very sound advice.

40's on an 80, GOOD GAWD! I bet that thing is a beast. Is Action Jackson on the 80's section? If not, can you point to some pics of his rig? I'd definitly like to check that out.

He's fairly new to mud, but yes, he can be found in the 80s section from time to time.

I have a most excellent quip that I could use in response, but it would likely "cross the line", so I won't post it. :flipoff2:

I'm keeping an eye on you though...

It was on the end of a carnival train that the wife and kids rode a few weeks back. When I saw it back there, I had to snap a pic. :D
Normally, I don't trust rides set up by toothless carnies, but this one seemed fairly harmless...until I realized the carnies couldn't figure out how to stop the train...I suppose it was nice that the kids got an extra long ride

A topless monkey...just the thing for a kid's ride...

Here's a few more pics from that day...

Get your facts straight FUG. We're not whipping a horse, we're spanking a monkey! (And one with BIG and WHITE "hands") :D

Just thoughts from another point of view.

The 80's and 100's are over-complicated and have suffered from rising steel costs. Both are roughly equal to a Mitsu Montero now days.

The 40 was a dinosaur and has no guts, like driving a tractor on the interstate.

I've had them all and would recommend for normal use a later model 2002-2005 Kia Sportage 2wd..

Just my $0.02 (canadian of course)

Doug.

Just F-ing with you!!

I think it depends on cash flow and usage or breakage potential. If he wants to wheel it hard then get the 80. Light duty and no worries about cash flow, cruise with the 100.

Bang for the buck, I think if I were him, I'd start with an 80 though.

Doug M.

Sorry to all of you Cannucks :)

When it comes to light vs heavy duty, I have far more confidence in my 100 (with all respect). There are 4 more crossmembers and therefore a stronger frame along with many other build-quality improvements. The IFS has proven (in at least my case) as solid and reliable as the live axle. When flexed out, the 100's frame/body doesn't budge wheras the 80 flexes/creaks some. Down washboard roads there's no comparison.
I see full floating axles as the 80's main advantage in "duty" quality.
Lastly factor in the safety improvements of the 100 and IMO it is the heavier duty of the two models (which it should be due to the latest design improvements all makers are using).

Refug? You mentioned dead horse? :D
