diesel fuel has about 20 % more energy than gasoline , diesel fuel is almost 10% more expensive right now , imho its not a super alternative at the moment , the average diesel vehicle would get between 20 and 40 % better milage depending on maney variables , if you have a short commute i dont see the bennifit , the true advantage of the diesel is in its simplicity and in the fact that it has to be built much more robustly than a regular internal combustion engine , in the long run the lack of maintenance that is needed compared to a gasser would be the benifits to me .

I don't know where you get the "the average diesel vehicle would get between 20 and 40 % better milage" as in my 60 series gasser to my 60 series 2H, the improvement is at least 70 percent percent.

Those robust parts come at a premium if anything does fail. And really, the only additional maintenance with the gasser is in the ignition system. Not that frequent and involving inexpensive parts, unless your still talking points distributors. The gas engine 80s seem to have head gasket woes at high mileage, the diesels have BEB's and potential turbo troubles.

The bottom of the JDM 80 pricing is around 12k. The equivalent year US trucks sell from about 3.5k.

With all that said I still agree with romey that long term you will be ahead with the economy of diesel. I expect my new to me 3B pays for itself and then some.

there is no way you can get 70% better milage with your diesel that is utterly impossible , unless your gasser is completley out of tune , my 3fe gets about 16mpg on highway and my old bj got about 20mpg on highway i imagine the hj would be simmilar, so you must get over 25 mpg in your 2h that is phenomenal .

I seem to get around 8 km/L combined, pretty consistently. That's with big 35'' tires and the fuel turned up. I'm thinking of turning down the fuel a bit as I do feel bad about the pretty consistent smokiness, but then I'll loose some of the torque needed to accelerate those big tires. I should just regear but the $$ and labour....oy veh....
