Did these trucks come with an in dash CB option? Was there just a delete plate if you didn't get it or was the dash made different? Thanks.

no the trucks never had them.
the celicas with the four headlites did. ( i dont know the years or what generation) it was really early on.

i have one of the CB radios.

the trucks may have had a delete plate but it was only for the am /fm radio, NOT a CB

I was able to fit a low profile CB in the cubby hole under the stereo on my '85 4Runner. This cubby hole was on trucks without the clock.

there isn't alot of room for any options in a first-gen dash...

I can get a picture of mine in a couple of days if you are interested in seeing what I have done.

I hope I didn't make you think I was speaking of the first-gen 4Runner. I actually spoke of the first-gen pickup (79-83) which is a pretty tight fit for anything.

Ahh. It say 79-85. Misunderstanding...

load the pic.... PLEASE.... Just for the Rare Epic Yota items...

I think he meant he got an aftermarket CB under his stereo.

There are a few iterations of an actual Toyota OEM CB radio, here's an interesting thread:

Toyota cb radio - TTORA Forum

I'm sure there are pictures here on MUD of another model, I know that Landpimp has one.

Here's my solution:

Truthfully, I hardly ever turned it on, and I pretty much hate CBs now that I've stepped up to having a 2M rig in the truck. I know that CBs can be handy sometimes, but my plan is to put my Yaesu FT-8800 in that spot when I get to re-assembling the interior.

^Same as my setup.

no kidding. anything din size was too tight of a fit... so, i cobbled this together to cover the hole left by the old oe radio:

I like what I see. Got a build thread?

that's a bit of a crappy picture.

i took out the old oe radio, to measure if the din unit would fit. it looked like it wouldn't without looking a mess (not that my marette frankenwiring looks great), and it was going to be a pia to put it back in.

so, i took a plastic project enclosure end and cut to fit, and stuck this in the middle:

QKits Electronic Kits: K8098, Audio Analyzer Kit

and put some velcro on the back of the ipod nano, and bob's your uncle. the deck is just hung with a bit of all-around to the bottom of the air vent. i haven't tidied up the wiring yet, i'll do that when i get at redoing the interior.

t'aint much room behind the seat either...

2 meter radio is an amateur radio that has a much better range that a CB. You have to get a license to operate, but it's very worth it!

(I'm studying right now to get my license)

But not a HAM license? If not, how would it be different?

EVERYONE.... As far as best or recommendations.... What are they? Is there a Unit that does it all?

Go do a search in the electronic section here... I'm sure it's been covered a bunch.

KLF... isnt that a 79-290?

Yup. Good eye. Not sure if I will re-install it when I get my interior back together.

Ham radio is much more civilized than CB, and like Jerod says you can work MUCH longer distances. There are several classes of licenses, 2 meters is the most popular band and you can work it with a Technician class license. You do have to take a test to be on the air, and you are assigned a call sign by the FCC (see sig). The equipment is typically more expensive that CB on average, but much better made as well. You can get some great deals at local Hamfests and eBay though.
