I have a 1979 FJ40. I am seeing black soot spots on my garage floor when I start the engine. What could this be an indication of and would anyone suggest any additives that they use?

Carb might need some adjusting... may be running a little rich! That’s where I’d start... there will be smarter guys hopefully chiming in on this 😉
Smart looking cruiser BTW....

The insides of your tailpipe are probably coated in black "soot", most are, especially if you use the choke. A normal by-product of internal combustion is water, which drips out the back, especially when the engine and exhaust system are cold.
I'm thinking that what you describe is pretty much normal. If it bugs you, maybe try leaning out your idle mixture screw some.
I like to use the Seafoam down the carb trick once every couple years, instructions on the can, or probably posted somewhere here if you search.
