Hi all.
I have an opportunity to purchase some axles out of a 79 FJ40, I know they should have the 3.7:1 R&P, Is this a decent upgrade for daily driving?
Right now I have 31" tires and some day I will be going to 33"
What other things should I consider if swapping axles?
Thanks

Thanks.
So, Pinion flange would mean new drive line end or swap thirds, Right?
From what I have read it should have the large knuckles.
I wasnt sure if I could simply swap thirds or not due to the splines, Im just not that familiar with them.
Thanks again

the flanges are big enough on the 3.73 thirds that you can just drill a second set of holes in them with no problems and keep your original driveshafts.....i put 3.73's in my '71 and it helped the gas mileage some, definitely lost some on the power side though. they are considerably stronger though with the fine splined pinion

Great info, This will please the :princess:

Are there any benefits to installing a 79 rear drum brake axle compared to the 74?

Doesn't the '79 rear drum set-up feature parking brake out at the wheels vs. off the back of the t-case?

Im not quite sure, But if so It sounds like I would need to figure out a cable set up unless a 60 series cable would work :hhmm:

If not Brian, I stock every possible conversion flange you could need. If these are the axles I'm thinking of, hurry, I've heard about them from 3 people now ;)

The park brake issue can be worked around easy enough if it is the axle integrated system, however its likely not as that was a 8/80' and later feature.

hijack or keeping a thread going??
am in the same kinda situation...........company pays for gas milage BUT when it got up to around 5$ a GAL got some grumbles:frown:.......local fj62 owner wanted my 4.11 axles......:hhmm:
:idea:got set of axles out of parted 79 pig from a fellow mudder to put under my 74.......have a 4 speed in it and drums all around..........so disk fronts + 3.7s is very appealing situation any input is appreciated ...........IIRC both the 74 and the 79 piggies share the same parking brake set up..........TIA
