Last night I started on my front fenders to see if there was any hope of getting them back in shape. I figure if they go completely south at least there are a few aftermarket ones available. I started pulling the left fender off. I have the light pedestal soaking in PB blaster. So far it doesn't want to budge.
Before I started.
The PO decided rubber fenders were a good idea. I pulled them off and now Ill try and fix the rust carnage.
Hopefully the PB blaster did its job and Ill be able to get the light off tonight. Id hate to have to buy a new one. Stay tuned.
Finally getting back to it. Hunting season is a month away and I want to drive my cruiser!
Cutting out some rust:
Forming up the new patch, it really wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be:
Shade Tree Mechanics Anvil, found on the side of the road believe it or not:
Old piece and new patch side by side:
And welded in place:
Again ladies and gentlemen Im not going for a show room truck. Im just getting rid of the rust and making it functional. A little rattle can after some finish sanding and it will be good enough for my taste.
And rust spot number two!
All cleaned up and shinny. I replaced it with 14 ga so hopefully it will last a little longer this time
Now time for some clean up and then paint.
Ive been slowly chipping away at it and finally got it back in running order tonight. Im not completely satisfied with the result but at least the rust is more or less gone. Ill try and get some more take care of over the winter. I really need a shop... some day.
Some before...
After (you can see the patch in there pretty well but I really don't care all that much). It will do until I can do it right.
Next I think Ill try and get the other side done, the bib, bezel and hood. But that's another project. Right now Im taking it Elk hunting.
I feel your pain working without a shop...I'm the same, I work on a gravel driveway in the hot sun or in the cold wind. It sucks, but maybe one day...
You are doing a great job, it really is looking much better...kudos!!

I know that when I start on the back end Ill have to find someplace to work when I can remove the top and keep everything dry. But for now Ill just keep on killing a little rust here and there. It getting easier and easier the further I go. To tell you the truth the longest part of the whole projected is getting the old paint off.
