Like more than a few fj40 owners I suffered from too many keys.
My fuel door lock was always the odd duck.

And then this popped up-

I had been on again off again looking to address my excess key problems...and this seemed as good a time as any.
It truly is the small things in life.
Having gotten gas twice since, the fiddling for the other key is not missed.

@ToyotaMatt /offers a rekey service and was able to redo one of his new locks....the plus side is I now have a second key as well.
The cool part is it's all oem parts, just repurposed from other applications.
The entire swap takes all of maybe 45 seconds.

His store is pretty cool as well.

ToyotaMatt @ Vintage Teq Parts is THE go-to guy for driver interface parts such as keys, switches, knobs, etc.

he helped me with re keying a client’s HJ45, with a brand new Glow-plug version ignition switch, which is extremely rare, and not only making it work with a new pair of door locks but also sourcing all the parts for me. I just told him what I needed and he made it happen.

I am impressed you still have an original key. Matt cut me a few blanks to replace the garbage that came with my 40 and the fit is perfect.

Totally enjoying not having to fiddle around with keys for just the simple act of filling the tank.....which happens two or three times a week.

Well, don’t go anywhere. I have a rolling chassis on my way to sheet metal eventually. Only took 28 years to get to this point.

@ToyotaMatt thought of you. Roanoke, VA

i feel old .

🤣
.....not

The Authors Hand Drawn sketch is a very very good Ditto of the Pre-1972 40 Series and 55 Series,

In-dash Ignition Switch and Key Lock combination Most Folks are familiar with ....

then , he transitions ahead in time to 1973 when both the 40 and 55 saw there in-dash locks and switches moved to the current and final location for the duration of both there Production time lines ,

the 55 / 56 Series thru - 7/80 usa spec.

-the UsA-Spec FJ40 9/83
- " " Canada BJ42 10/84
- non-usa HJ47 10/85

I bring the above production data time lines as i understand them to be , supported by Factory Dealership & PDC Parts Research ONLY
issued Print Media , " Vehicle Identification Manuals " i my personal library ....

because i am and have always have been very mu confused as to when the whole Locking and Non-Locking Steering Column Engagement
Button was Introduced ?

Why it seems to me it was in a most random fashion and in no particular format or reason for production date here and 40 and 55 serires
model there from 1973-10/85 ?

My curiosity Peaked recently as i un-boxed this repair and restore job mailed to my shop ?

i figured my old trusty TEq Oracal @Living in the Past may have clues to help ......... :)
