Yesterday I was wondering if I had issues with the transfer case or rear differential. I am now pretty sure it is the transfer case. All of the linkage is moving but I think it’s not moving far enough to change it into high range. I have read about vacuum operated transfer case on 1971 fj40. I don’t believe I have any parts of that on mine. Assume the PO had removed and installed the linkage. Can I remove only the transfer case and leave the transmission in the vehicle or is it more advisable to drop them as one unit?

Steve

I hope I am nearing the end of the rebuild of 71 FJ40, motor has been rebuilt (1F) clutch was just replaced. Finally to the point where I drove it around the block. It will only do 25-30 mph. After soooo many surprises on the project felt like I was on the home stretch. The motor sounds like it is running good, the clutch feels good starts to grab just off the floor. I left about 1/4 inch of gap between throughout bearing and clutch fingers. I drove it around the block with only the rear drive shaft connected. Transfer case shifter is left and all the way forward. Tach is not working but at 25 on speedo I would guess it is about 3000 rpms. It goes through the gears fine, shifts good.

I can only assume the issue is in the transfer case or rear differential. Is there anyway to determine where to look next?

Thank you all for your help
Steve

in top gear you feel 25mph is it?
sounds like its in low range

Can you confirm that the shifter is actually moving under the truck and going to high range watching linkage shift?
All of the linkage is moving. Kind of hard to tell from these pictures.

Here are a couple of pictures, very hard to tell but all of the linkage moves, NOT sure if it is actually going into high range. Is there a way to tell from looking at the linkage?

That is a manual 4WD shifter not the vacuum shifter. It has nothing to do what range the transfer case is in. Originally high low range is controlled by a lever under the dash to the left of the heater. Do you still have that lever? That is a lot of linkage. When I bought my 68 with the same original setup the pivot point on the right rear motor mount was not threaded in all the way and snapped. There are a number of areas that can be adjusted. If you have combination manual shifter it's the rod going to the lever on the back of the transfer case that controls high neutral low in the transfer case. Prior to 4/75 it was multi piece setup. Lever on the back of the transfer case points to the right. After that it points to the front. What have will help with the fix.

See if you can shift the transfer case into N. The rig should not drive with the tranny in any gear. I suspect the linkage isn't adjusted or set correctly

Yes you could remove only the transfer, putting it back is harder. I always remove the engine/tranny/transfer in one piece. Back when I was younger stronger faster I could remove the unit in 3 hours from start to unit on the ground.
