Impressions:

LOVE it....absolutely....thoroughly....completely.....zero complaints on the whole deal, just need to add a 2nd "drop" pedal for two-foot work. t-case shifts as expected (stiffly), tranny is perfect, stall rocks, brakes work fine with the combo, it idles up to obstacles and a light throttle burp pushes it up and thru....

I was VERY VERY pleased with the combo, and can't wait until I get more seat time to drive it better!!

Yeah, it kicks ass. Worked MUCH better than before and hell, it used to work great!

Fun times.....

autos rule!!!!!!

i'm stoked that everything worked so well for you. guess i'll be checking out all the pics at work tomorrow!

Woody.. I think IIRC, you and I have a simnilar braking setup.. LC vented discs up front, Monte calipers in the rear.. what's your master/booster (if any) setup now? I'm think I'll need to add a booster to mine so it won't drive through the brakes... what was your experience?

Is this your impression after the round up?

Could you elaberate on highs and possible lows of the setup?

unknown FJ40 master, believe it's a 77, with the smaller 74-ish booster on there....it's not much, but I never felt it was driving thru.

yeppers...after....when I arrived at RoundUp, I literally had 100 yards on the drivetrain, putting it on/off the trailer twice to get it out for exhaust work. Took it for a few spins around camp, no complaints....Thurs wheelin, learning HOW to drive it, then 60mph for 10 miles to get fuel.

Honestly, while I haven't spent much time in other automatic-equipped rigs, I had zero complaints. C also liked it, and is looking forward to more seat time.

Goods: any obstacle required a little acc pedal pressure to get thru, and my motor is mild enuf and the torque convertor stock enuf that a gentle touch would get it moving. The advice I received on stalls was perfect. Very easy to hold a steady tire speed. Rear wheel hop seemed reduced, and it "felt" easier to spin 'em faster to overrun the hop when it did occur. Braking was excellent, not touchy, but I never felt I was hanging on and hoping it would slow down...difficult ledges and such (like the busted knuckle spot) were a breeze, and slapping from R to 1 with the clear-gated Art Carr was quick and effortless. Mounting of the system was very solid, which is a good AND a bad...the good was when I had a DS front about 4' in the air, shifted into R, and the torque pulled the tire down....shifted back into 1 and I continued on easily.

Bads: need a 2nd, lower brake pedal for two-foot driving, Nolen's is simple but works. Need to get something on the breather so when Kris and C decide to enter the roll contest at midnite, I don't lose any ATF. No backup light switch yet, gotta figger that out, or hotwire direct. On the torque shift, putting into R, because of the firm mounting of the drivetrain (esp the motor) REALLY shifts the torque on the suspension, and the rig rocks a few inches....useful at times, could be interesting at others. Something to get used to, and have too see how it reacts when the PS front is WAY in the air. I wouldn't mind deeper gears for the road, 4.11 stockers are a bit high, 4.88 would be nicer,

Well, this won't work, they don't make a course spline 4.88 :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

standard old boring Art Carr....valve body is standard, so it's P-R-N-4-3-2-1....I then cleared all the left-side gates out so a 1 to R shift is one long throw. Right side was untouched, and that was nice, since 2-3 are one opening (N-R is the other notch IIRC), and between-trail road time in low was in those two gears only...plus, if I had a spot where you COULD run the wheelspeed, the throw from 2 to 3 was solid as well...

may swap to a reverse manual valve body someday, but the standard manual VB worked just fine with this shifter setup. Cable operation is very smooth, very much a "get what ya pay for" deal (B&M ratchets are a PITA, and what, $75 or less? - the Art Carr goes $200 or so)

Found your next cruiser improvement, set of 2.5 rockwell steering axles for 800US on pirates.

Looks good on Proffits rig.
