I am wondering what the tow capacity is for an 85 BJ70. I want to tow my Honda on a dolly, but am wondering if it can handle it. I do not have a brake controller for this either. I figure the towing would be OK, provided my brakes are up to par, but am wondering about the power. As we all know, this is not a Ferrari! Has anyone towed a car with their 70 series?

Cheers,
Jason

Since the 3B has a hard time getting out of it's own way, I'd say youre crazy to try & tow a car. 90 HP + 5,200lb vehicle + another 4,000 or so lbs for the Honda?? You do the math:)

My 70 is turbo'd & re-geared and has a hard time with my loaded M101 trailer which near as i can figure weighs about 1,200 lbs loaded down with gear and my hannibal tent....food for thought

How much does a 1991 CRX weigh?
And how far do you want to go?

Across down?
Across country?

Take alook at what happened to this full size dodge towing a mini truck with no trailer brakes. Impact speed was 15-20mph and the dodge is wrecked.

That bieng said I have towed a 3300lb trailer with no brakes 1500Km round trip with my 81. Power wise I could of used more. Braking, I had to watch what I was doing and gear down lots. It was okay. but brakes would of been nice. I just had to keep my speed down, and go slow and steady. Down hills I put it in 3rd and the engine hold it back.

Cheers,
Nick

BTW: Arcteryx I like your sql statement in your avatar.
Being a Christian and a developer I think it is funny.

You could also do

MYSQL = Select * from grace where deserving = 0 ;
or
MYSQL = Update bookoflife set christ_accepted = 1 where name = '" & name & "' ;
etc...

Hmmm, people probably think I am wierd now. :)
I guess they will not understand this either:

average_guy$ man women
No manual entry for women

Cheers,
Nick :)

I tow a full Cruiser with a trailer with the most heavy box when I move last june. Don't know the weigh but for sure very heavy. Figure... ±40 box , ±30 lbs each = ±1200 lbs.

It's not a Honda... but the cruiser do the job pretty well.

i wouldn't recommend any more than a 1000 lbs for the 70 series. can it tow more? probably (in low range), is it safe, not in my books... it is the short wheelbase and body weight i would be concerned with...
just my opinion, take it for what it is worth...

just for the ones that doesn't know, the maximum weight for that CRX is 2500 Lbs, if he has it striped it could go as low as 1800 Lbs.

As stated above, it depends on the roads, downhill or uphills.
My opinion, if is is downhill, its dangerous, if is uphill and the car can take it i think its pretty safe. But off course, make sure you can be as safe as you can.

Thanks for the notes.

Nick, amazing what happened to the Dodge, and that is a big rig. And yes, thanks for the note on the avatar. I was looking for something clever that would encompass my beliefs in Jesus Christ. Being a computer geek, I thought if would suffice.

The CRX is lighter, but still would be around 2300lbs. I am not going to tow it. It would be for 1000 miles/1600kms. I am headed to Austin TX from Columbia, MO, and would rather not go that slow. Besides, once you hit Texas, you start getting into rolling hills on the eastern side.

Wayne, your figure is probably accurate for sure, especially since I do not have a turbo like dieselbigot. I guess I will end up shipping them, or at least one.

Well I don't do lbs only kg I have pulled the middy full and a box trailer full off camping gear combined weight 2.8ton the middy weight is me and full tank off juice 2.2 t.So it pulled it easy 13bt and 440a auto on 32'

there is a difference between towing "ability" and what is a safe weight to tow...

just because you can move something down the road does not make it safe for you (and especially the other motorists on the road)... if you can't stop then you could hurt or kill someone else.

How on earth do you make a trailer to carry cars with no brakes? Is that even LEGAL in the USA?

You'd be charged and convicted of reckless endagerment and careless driving and probably lose your license for 2+ years if you did that over here in Aus (what the dodge did). It's ILLEGAL to make a trailer bigger than 6'x4' (single axle) over here without at least hydraulic brakes. Anything over 18 foot long has to be electric brakes with an approved controller in the car. (IE: Anything bigger than your average car trailer).

Stuff like this scares me. My old FJ73 has (safely) towed a hzj75 troop carrier on a car trailer behind it because our trailers are made to spec. It sure as hell didn't go fast, but I had no trouble braking or steering. My HZJ75RP Ute has a rated tow capacity of 3500kg and I would have ZERO inhibitions towing a full 3.5 tonne plus a full 1.4 tonne load in the back of the ute at the same time.

I think the issue at hand isn't what the car can handle, but what spec are the trailers made to?

I have legally towed in Europe well over 3500kg with a trailer equipped with air brakes and automotive type steering using a Landrover 88.With low range and 4 wheel drive even heavier loads.
I agree with Esteran, the trailer, brakes, and tongue weight determines your towing capacity.

there is 2 things that determine towing capacity, the legal description and common sense...
if you want to tow more then do a search and look at the 80 series that towed a 55 on a braked trailer for an example of what you DO NOT want to end up like...

For sure, common sense is always good.
Iv'e seen on the Hope Princenton Hwy, three times now, where a travel trailer pulled by a powerful pickup lossed it and flipped the trailer. Speed was the main cause of the accidents.
Had they less powerful towing vehichles they would have never gotten themselves in that situation in the first place.
The trailer accident in your link was caused by faulty equipment as far as I can see...
The landrover was actually a 109 not an 88, the legal towing capacity was 6 metric tons with a trailer equipped with air brakes.

Where there is uphills there is always downhills which kind of means it will always be dangerous.:D

The longer, heavier and lower the tow vehicle the better.
BJ70 are not quite in this league regardless of whats written on the tow hitch or anywhere else or even with a braked trailer.

Lke Wayne says a 1000lbs or so

Here is a pic of a van that was being towed by an 80 series within its "legal limits"
It got 2 flat tyres going downhill and the only thing that stopped them going over was the crash barrier.
Maybe its just me but I believe a vehicle should be able to control its load when something goes wrong.
