Hey all,

The metal cover on the steering column that houses the turn signal and the shifter is extremely loose. I'm having huge troubles shifting into 2nd as the housing moves drastically, throwing off the linkage geometry.

How dafuq do I get this off? There are no screws on the outside or the bottom. I checked all my manuals and nada. Guessing I need to pull the steering wheel? Once I get that off, how does this housing stay in place? There isnt even details on pulling the steering wheel in my manuals.

Worried I'm opening a can of worms but not shifting into second in traffic is stressy.

the big thing in the center of the wheel needs to come off, there should be screws in each spoke of the wheel from behind that hold the center to the wheel.
should be a nut holding the wheel to the column.
I'm not sure how the pivot assembly is attached to the column.
on 40/45's there is a screw or bolt that pinches the pivot to the column.

Here's a picture of mine torn down. If you look at the bottom left there's two special bolts and nuts with a tab on them, they hold the sleeve from turning. I removed the shifter rod, but if you reach behind the sleeve and up in there is where you can tighten the nuts. The whole system kinda sucks because the tabs are thin and bend. Mine gets loose from time to time and if you tighten them too much the tabs get bent and won't hold. My memory is from five years ago, hope this helps.

My guess is my "special bolts" fell completely out. shyte

I don't think the bolts are gone, maybe the nuts fell off or loosened up. The bolt has a square head and fits in a (pocket). The little tab is thin brass maybe and fits into a slot and those tabs hold the housing tight. Bad design.

Pulled it apart and tightened the nuts. Its the 2 nuts, one at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Super easy. Shifts perfectly now.

:) J Mack said he took the picture, dropped the camera and ran. That was a bad week for stretchy nuts. It took a while, but I got it cleared up. :) That still makes me laugh.
