Month and a half later we meet I saw this cruiser in person Nice to meet you Brian forgot my camera too :hhmm:

A FJ40L OEM soft top, July - Aug production date tagged as a 67 No Rust just some very minor dents ! original white repainted white, the PO changed the door hinges to hard top hinges (red paint) at some point.
The fold down tailgate is in perfect condition all holes for twist fasteners original including the rear corners and no extra holes :). ok just as I thought NO foot man loops at the rear corners just like my 66.

I have an OEM hold down bracket for you too ;).

My suggestion to you is fix what's broken , don't fix what is not my $.02

Brian you have a very clean rig Congratulations :flipoff2:

Unmolested 67

Brian -
Excellent cruiser! My $0.02 - Make it safe to drive and then just drive it. Don't be in a big hurry to "improve" it. You'll be amazed at what a stock cruiser can do. And don't let anybody swipe those hubcaps!
Happy trails!
Greg

68 FJ40, stock and in need of a paint job

Just enjoy it as is. Make sure it's all working safely as it should, brakes, steering, tires...etc, and I bet it'll last another 40 years, so really no need to think you'd have to change anything unless it's broken.

He's not just saying this; he REALLY means it!

Mark A.

BTW, as Dusty alluded to, you'll have better luck ordering parts for it if you call it out as a 66, like his.

Congratulations, you now have the disease!
I'm going to have to agree with everyone who said to leave it alone, after all, how do you fix what isn't broken? you're very luck to find a low-rust rig in such great shape, if anything, I'd recommend having the engine looked at, just so you know where you stand, then just drive it. A stock cruiser is a beautiful thing.

Stocker are so sweet not very many cruisers make it that long with all thier parts and the po not screwing something up that is a pita to restore. You could of started with a rust bucket and a pocket full of money and used all the money and maybe not even gotten as nice as it is now you saved yourself the hassle and and got a beautiful rig up front. I dont know if its even possible to have money and cruiser at the same time. Enjoy it

Cruisin in Sin City with Dusty

It was great to meet Dusty and his cruiser. Got loads of great advice. Dusty really knows his rig, and has done AMAZING things to it.
Mine . . . well, it will be a slow process, but I'm really enjoying it.

I took a pic of my cruiser next to Dusty's. I've dismantled some of my rig. I want to get the pieces cleaned up and either painted or powder coated.

Very Nice

I'd go with paint...my 0.02

thats really cool to see...interesting about the rear loops not being there:hhmm:

there was a discussion about a truck not too long ago possibly being a "topless model" fj40 but...he had hard top door hinges with the tailgate...this one has tailgate and fst doors but...no rear loops....i wonder if the other rig had loops also :hhmm:

Toyota did alot of different things ...and had made many suttle changes here and there and very area specific stuff.

how many holes are along the side rail (from door to tailgate)?

IIRC I counted 9 per side

JohnnyC My 66 with no re paint in original condition (Before) had no footman loops at all and no holes to fill I have since added footman loops as to fit the Pakistan top to my rig But my top rail had at least twenty holes per side so I welded them all up an drilled new :hillbilly:

kayline replacement canvas's had 10 on either side...kayline sent an extra 4 twists per side when replacing the canvas for theirs...three for the corners and one near the doors on either side.

the kaylines were sold thru toyota.

the red 66 that was pointed out had footman loops in the rear correct? :hhmm:

here is a kayline top'd rig for those that need pics :) this truck is a 72

9 is what is what saw may be I missed one ? What caught my eye on Brian's rig the holes were evenly spaced on the back corner going forward and no extra holes and the out side has been repainted white, and the inside is original Paint 403 lilly White I think ? I will talk to Brian later this week end

The blue 72 look how close the first three twist fasteners are

Just saw this rig today confirmed 9 holes per side no welds or fillers Looks to uniform not to be original to me.

A 1965 Model with lack of footman loops

yes it does look like there are no footman loops in the rear of that one.

still strange however that the red one had the loops but had a top that used the common fasteners in the rear.

i would think that when the vinyl come out that they went with no straps in the corners...but found out very early that the vinyl shrinks like the canvas and went back to straps in the corners? :meh:

I just don't know, but it got me bugged would like to see how the twist fasteners were installed in that top. Brian will be going to a soft top he asked me to help him out with the resto options. just something to consider.

Just gonna bump this up. I've got 67' FJ40L with a hard top. No footman loops on the rear corners but I do have the holes across the top of the tub (underneath hardtop).

My title says 1967 but when I run the frame number it comes up 11/65. Another confusing one. Could this have been one of the "topless" models?

:meh:
