60 vs 80 gears interchangable?

Rear yes, front no. The rear diff in the 80 is the same as both the front and rear diffs in a 60.

Why, thank you, sir.

Anytime. What I can't tell you is if the driveshaft flanges are the same or not. Also, 80's came with 4.10's, not 3.73's.;)

Flange bolt pattern changed in 9/84.

Don't FJ80 rears come w/ 4.11111 (37/9)
and FJ60's have 3.70000 (37/10)?

Quick hijack- What is the front ratio in FJ80?
Being minitruck, it might be slightly different, perhaps 4.1000 (41/10)?

Well crap, I thought stock US 60 was 3.73 and the 62's came with 4.10's ( 41/10 ). I gotta remember to count the teeth on my spare stock 60 diff when I get home.

The 80 has to have the same ratio front and rear I thought. When the CDL is locked in an 80, wouldn't having different ratios front and rear, even by that little, spell disaster over say 50 miles or so? Maybe not, but who drives that far with the CDL locked anyway.

I know the flange pattern changed during the 60 run and stayed the same through the 62, I just wasn't sure if the 80 had the same pattern as the 62 or later 60.

I can tell you that the 60 has 3.70 (37/10)
the 62 has 4.111111 (37/9)
I don't know about 80 stuff.
I do know that 62 drive flanges & 60 drive flanges do not mate up....62 is bigger.

FJ62 has 4.11
FJ80/FZJ80 has 4.10

That's not entirely true. Your 60 is an early model. As Jim said, the drive flange pattern changed in '84 to the larger, rectangular pattern. That pattern is the one in all late 60's and 62's. The question is, is the late 60 / 62 pattern the same as the 80?

It's hard to count (see) the pinion gear.
But the outside edge of the ring will actually be stamped "37/9" or "37/10"

No, they only need to be within 1% or so.
Heck, tires can have different rolling radii by much more than 1%.

When I was a youngster I had a ford 4x4 truck that had a dana front axle w/ 4.09 and a 9" rear w/ 4.10 IIRC. That's just how they came that month.:meh:

Yeah, when I checked it was real hard to see the pinion. Not impossible, but hard. Just checked the ring gear again to see what it said, and it only read 37, not 37/9 or 37/10. Checked three times on both the outer edge and the carrier side.
