Gday all!
Over the past 8 or so years of my current hj61 60 ownership, I have put up with, troubleshoot, repaired, and made a lot of excuses for poor airflow and aircond performance in hot weather… a few months ago, I decided to fix this - properly….
A bit of history (most of this is already on Mud under various headings of what I did over the weekend / help me threads / what do you think threads!!)
First, there wasn’t much air out of the vents… I sucked a lot of stuff out of the evaporator with a garden blower in reverse through a hole I cut in the fan side of the evaporator box! - this did improve flow! And stayed like this for a couple of years… then the fan started playing up. I replaced bushes / turned the commutator on a lathe / sanded / cleaned etc, but in the end I bought a new, genuine fan from Leon Caitlin in Aus… next, the aircond really struggled in hot weather - basically not working at all at idle and not much better at high speeds (this is in mid to high 40degrees Celsius temps). I decided on a new parallel flow condenser - recommended by Mr Landcruiser which required stripping the front of the car, customer brackets to mount it and new aircond hoses. I showed my aircond guy the condenser and he made up hoses with connections on one end and extra hose on the end. This ended up okay, but not ideal as I had to flip the condenser to clear other bits (aux battery tray / Intercooler piping etc)

Next, I tried to install a new tx valve and pressure switch onto the existing hole I cut in the evaporator box. This didn’t happen and I decided I needed a new evaporator (ordered a new Jayair one through Leon Caitlin and a new genuine tx valve on eBay. The evaporator box came out easy enough - apart from my after market wiring that got in the way… the old bs new shows a bit of difference!

From there - new closed cell seals - with extra super glue on the sticky back to help, and it all went back in. Another trip to my aircond guy to connect the ends to the hoses (and a new dryer from a Ford Falcon which is larger than the original). He regassed it with 134a, which he got (from memory) 750grams into it - apparently very good compared to stock - but I have no idea of this…
It certainly blows a lot of air now, and is so cold my hand hurts when held close to it! Hopefully the coldness stays around back up in the mid 40-degree temps!!
Thanks!

Drew

Thanks for posting your story up. How was the Jayair evaporator to install? Did it need any tweaking or modification?

Toyota/Denso have discontinued the evaporator for right handed 60s, so AFAIK it's the only alternative.

I've got a used unit coming to me from Japan which in pictures looks to be in like-new, but if that's no good, I'll be ordering a Jayair unit. My existing one came from AUS used and looked just like yours, with 35 years of red dust and dog's arse corroded into the fins.

The Jayair evaporator fitted perfectly! Very tight in the evaporator box though!
Thanks, that's good to know. Looks like a quality unit.

The blower unit that you got I believe is for a 70 Series, was that a straight fit? Was it Denso or Toyota branded? If you have it, the part number would be very helpful, thanks.

Blower motor photo - Denso on it… am unsure if it is for a 70 Series - but fit and identical to the one that was replaced…

As far as what it cost me…. The condenser, evaporator and tx valve were all purchased by me through different vendors for (this is all approximate - from memory, without me going through invoices etc) $800 AUD. The custom hoses / end connections / installing the tx valve and pressure switch within the evaporator (and cost of pressure switch), as well as re-gassing the system with 134a refrigerant cost $350 AUD… By the time closed-cell foam for the vents, steel sheet for the condenser bracket and other minor bits, it is probably $1300 AUD - without any running-around costs or the weekends I have spent mucking around getting it done!!
Worth it though!!

Does Leon Caitlin have a website to get in touch? Needing an evaporator for FJ60 like yesteday. Looking for the best replacement for my 86 60. Thanks

Australian cars are right handed, so the Jayair condenser will not fit a left handed US vehicle, which I assume you have.
