81 truck rolled into the shop with almost no body mounts, body just rubbing up against the frame in some areas i have genuine body mounts on the way but i can't get the ones for the steps. what is a good alternative that will work? It just a piece of rubber with a hole in it. does anybody know how thick it should be? Hoping body mount 52208-90300 will be close enough.

Did you check with Energy Suspension (poly body kit) or Daystar kits?
i did see the daystar kit, was really hoping to avoid polyurothane and i do want to use as many genuine body mounts as possible. I'm getting everything else OEM I would hate to buy a big daystar kit just to use the step cushions and throw everything else away.

For my steps on my 65 FJ40, I bought the appropriate thickness chunk of rubber and cut to size and punched a hole for the bolt. I haven’t looked at the differences to 1981 though but I believe it’s the same design…. A square chunk of rubber.
I would update all your body mounts first. Then measure the distance between the step and the frame mount before buying a chunk of rubber.

I had to call ES, they will sell the individual items separately, but they were kind enough to send me just the step pads for free awhile back. But @red66toy has probably the easiest/cheaper solution.

Fwiw, I have ES polys installed and have the NIB OEM pads tucked away in my hoard stash. But for daily driving the poly's win. Check with Mark (@65swb45 of MarksOffroad, he might have something.

thanks for the info, why do the poly's win? They are not softer.

sounds like a plan.

I mentioned that last part since I went to mount running boards and measured the distance and there was a difference between the driver and passenger side. 1/8” difference in thickness between the two. Then I noticed my OG body mounts were cooked. So I’m going to replace those all, then go back and tackle the running boards once things change and hopefully more consistent distance. :)

Well compared to the OE rubber they are much more forgiving and probably one of the best upgrades I have done today. Our 6/70 LC was a barn yard find with 36k documented miles. The OE are harsher/harder when compared to the Poly. Suspension-wise Poly is less forgiving (vs body mounts).

that's interesting. The new OE rubber feels pretty soft to me. I have used some poly parts in the past I expected it to be hard. this is a fj43 so there is one extra mount that a 40 doesnt have and it's not included in the daystar kit. i don't know if one OEM mount would play nice with the everything else being daystar.
