4wd issues.

so, i have a 79 cruiser that is generally in great shape and I've never had issues with the 4wd. My neighbor likes the cruiser and has mentioned several times that he'd like to go 4wheelin with me some time. So after he helps me take my top off yesterday I offer to take him up for a ride. Just when we start getting into the really rough and rocky stuff, I can't throw it in 4wd. It kinda feels like the 4wd housing has shifted so the shift lever is hitting the floor board and can't go into gear. Anyone had this problem? Any solutions?

good new is, my trusty cruiser made it up the really rough section of the trail anyway. I just had to take it a little faster than usual. It killed on me a few times because I was going too slow for the gear, but she pulled through for me.

been driving it in snow... maybe linkages are corroded together, easy fix...

follow the linkages from the 4x4 lever, to the nosecone where the selecter rod goes in, remove the nosecone and beat it with a rubber mallet to get it out, then sand the rod back and grease. if that is the problem, otherwise i don't know

bad_religion_au is on the right track. I concur on starting below the truck. Have somebody move the lever for you so you can see what direction the pieces are trying to move in. See if you can help them along in that direction and get them to move further than the shifter will move them on its own. Then you will have the root of your problem!
