Can anybody tell me what the consequences might be, if any, of switching to 4H while driving without having hub lock engaged?

I did that today and i heard a brief but kinda loud screeching noise. What have i done?

if the front hubs are not locked then you are trying to turn a "dead" driveshaft from a t/case front output companion flange that is rotating. you could easily strip out the engaging splines.

How do i know whether i've stripped the splines or not? Would that be an expensive repair?

Hello and welcome.

Try pulling both the hubs off and taking a look.
They are quick and easy to remove.
Once you pull the hub off you will see the splines on the axle.
See if they are damaged. The should look nice and straight.
It should be pretty obvious if they are wrecked.

Then look at the hub itself.
Is it damaged inside? If so you probably just need a new hub.
A hub should not be to expensive. Just don't buy Warn.
Warn hubs brake to easy (from what I have heard). Get another Aisin one.

I would also remove both hubs and check before you try 4wd again.
If it is just the hub right now you don't want to damage the axle if it is still good.

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks for the replies guys,

Where are the hubs located though? do they unscrew or are they bolted on? It's an automatic button activated 4H if that makes a difference. I'd really rather do this myself than have to take it in somewhere, its time i learned, i'm just not sure quite how to go about it. Anybody?

Lock your hubs, and then see if you can still engage and disengage your 4wheel drive. If it does not seem to be working or is jammed one way or the other, or still makes a nasy noise then you probably damabed the engaging collar splins.

Cheers,

Michael

If you find you have damaged the engaging colar, depending on what transmission/Tranfer you have will dictate a minor job or more of a major job to fix it.

If you have a 4 speed older transfer case you can pull the front assembly (that goes to front drive shaft) and replace the colar and re-install and you are set.

If you have split transfer case then you must take transfer case apart to get at front engaging colar.

Cheers,

Michael

it is not the locking hubs that will be stripped but, as Micheal says, the coupler inside the front nose of the t/case.
if you just did the manover for a second then i highly doubt any serious damage was done. if repeated then the repair will be expensive since you will have to tear the t/case apart...

Three questions:

1) Do you have a factory service manual?

2) Do you have the basic tools?

3) Do you have mechanical experience?

If you have #1 and #2 you don't need #3... I would really recommend #1.

Where are you located? USA, CA, or else where in the world?

Wayne is correct, if you just did it once and stopped to take it out or turned it off quickly you are most likely ok.

And based on your other answers I am going to say you have a split case transfer case (push botton 4wheel drive).

Aslo based on your answers I would say if you had an Cruiser sold in USA then it would be a 62 series, if you have a diesel from canada it would also be a 62 series, if you have JDM diesel it could be one of the following:

89 or newer 7x series such as a BJ70 or BJ73 or 74 or
89 or newer LJ78 series or PZJ o HJZ 77 series

I am sure Wayne can think of a few more.

Stop the suspense tell is what kind of Cruiser you have Year and Model please :crybaby:

haha ok ok, i'll tell you. A turbo diesel 1991 Prado SX5 (which i'm planning on feeding bio diesel), straight outta Japan with the steering wheel on the other side and everything. I really love it, which is why im so concerned about the possible hub damage.

To answer your questions, PVCruiser:

1) i have a photocopied version of what im pretty sure is the factory service manual, or at least, some kind of official car manual.

2) no

3) i'm as blank a slate for automobile knowledge as they come i'm afraid.

satisfied everyone?!

its not making any strange noises when i re-engage 4H, but still, i need to be sure. Its hard to tell if the 4h is really even engaged...

Ah HA - LJ78 I knew it had to be one of those (LJ78 aka Prado I)
do you also have e-locker hubs in front (aka push botton hubs as well)?? probably the best way for you to test it is find or make some wet slippery roads, have the hubs locked then drive down it with 4 wheel engaged (sliding just a bit if you can) and then do it again with 4 wheel disengage, you should noitce a difference if your 4wd is working. From what you describe I would think everthing is fine.

Just for you information if you have a manual transmission you would have the r151, and I am pretty sure thay has the same split transfercase as the same year Cruisers.

Cheers,

Michael

yep, they're the push button hubs, got a button for hub lock right beside the button for 4H. Won't be any slippery roads here for many months, if only i had a lift.

May I ask where you are from?
