I think carb needs a tweak, timing is off, and some queertron thing going on.

I'm going to take it to mechanic and get a good tune up. I think that is a good place to start.

John has mentioned some of these in past threads, so they are no surprise.

Oil leak is a little worse than mentioned but I think that was caused by being driven for more than 15 minutes to store when weather is nice That might be fixed with Lucas and a heavier wt oil.

I'm happy with purchase. Kids and wife like it and it got me home after going 320 miles. Wish I could of got it for 2k cheaper.

I bet John didn't drive it 300 miles a year.

Glad yoiu got home and glad you think I divulged everything. I drove a lot...for 15 miles at a time so I got a drip or 2 but 320 miles will do that to a 35 year old truck. Wish I could have got it for another $2k .

I had my last moose drool as soon as I got out of the 40. I had a lot of friendly intl sign of friendship thrown at me as I was going 45 down the highway today so it was nice to relax.

A 40 should be able to cruise faster than that, right? (tech question)

Good work on downing the last Moose Drool at the end of your maiden 40 adventure. It seems fitting.

Yes, you should be able to cruise considerably faster than 45. My '82 has stock 3.73 gears, and it'll hum along comfortably at 75 if I want to go that fast, but I don't. IMO a 40 isn't safe at speeds much in excess of 65. The rollover at 60 was enough to convince me that 60 is fast enough, in a 40. Had I been going any faster, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Well it would not even turn over at the YJ. The owner, B Tolleson, jumped me off. Had to stay hooked up for 5 minutes to get it to turn over then started easily.

No, clutchwill not leak oil.(thanks Jordan) What I was concerned with was a rear seal leaking onto the clutch disc causing it to slip. If it was leaking badly there I was worried about Mike getting home with the truck.

Sorry. Didn't even see your post. No disrespect from this young whipper-snapper! Saw that Mike thought it was the clutch and wasn't sure if he thought it was leaking oil or that was the cause for the engine woes

When y'all sober up, can anybody tell me what might cause a back fire type sound? It happens when trying to accelerate but seems to come from somewhere other than tailpipe.

Carb Mike. I experienced it about 5 times. Just put that Mark A rebuilt aisin on and 90 percent of your issues thus far should go away. That's why it was included. Altitude may be making that carb act-run funny until you do

Sounds like backfire through the carb. Usually indicates a timing issue but can be carb or valve issues as well. Start with a good tune up including a check on the timing. Then chang out the carb and make sure you have someone experienced to tune it for you. If you still have problems after that we will have to check/adjust the valves.

Can this backfire through carb be bad or damage anything? Should I not drive this till it is repaired? Last time I drove a carb motor was on a 1974 VW Ghia. Never had to fool with it. I did do a valve job on it once and completely effed it up.

John, sorry for offending but your/my truck runs like @&%#. Thought if you really knew the answer it would be running better.

I would crank it to move it around but I wouldn't run to the store in it untill I had done the tune up and checked the timing. The timing mark is a little BB on the flywheen visable through a little window on the rear passenger side of the motor/bellhousing. A quick search on MUD should provide some pics to get a better idea of where to look than I can describe.

Thanks. No more joy rides till it is fixed. Great info for someone like me who is ignorant. I did not get any backfires from Jackson to Hot Springs but have had about 8 since I got here.
