This weekend I pulled the hard top off and installed the bikini top.

The bikini top comes with philipps head screws for the tiger channel. I threw those away and added hex head self tapping screws so I could unbolt them easier without worrying about stripping the head out.

Also used the same hex head bolts on the footman loops. They installed easily.

She wanted to be the first to ride in it so we did our first shakedown run around the commercial block (a couple miles) and it was a blast.

Saturday I installed the rear license plate and am waiting on the front lisc plate bracket from CCOT. Also ordered some OEM mirrors that bolt into the windshield frame. I need to get some new doors pins and a rear rubber mat so ordering more parts.

My nephew wanted to drive the 40 Saturday but I need to put new brakes and rotors on the truck this week so hopefully next weekend he and I will go for a spin.

Saturday installed the rear license plate, adjusted the windshield wipers, mocked up the seat belt straps (waiting for the CCOT 9 inch extension), spent the day cleaning the shop and warehouse to make room for the hard top.

I've been waiting for parts and am off to Colorado for vacation tomorrow but I did get my CCOT mirrors installed. Here's a pic!

Added the last two pics from a Memorial Day Run!!! Was a blast. Drove straight and true. Everything works great. Time and patience sure have paid off on this build.

Double checked the brakes. New Pads and rotors came in, ended up replacing the front Calipers as well. They are purdy now and work great too.

Also painted the center caps black. Looks really good.

The passenger side caliper was stuck on the rotor (was wondering why it kept grabbing) so all new rotors, pads and calipers up front. Also repacked all the bearings and everything is turning properly and smoothly now.

Had a bit of an issue with the thermostat housing and ended up breaking it off trying to remove it. Thankfully the 79 t-stat housing worked until I can get a new one...would have been up the creek if I didn't have the 79 laying around waiting for resto...check the pic out. Still haven't been able to figure out why it won't come apart.

Update on the thermostat : Its was the age old problem of steel screws bonding with aluminum housing. I found a lower housing from Lash and will be putting anti-sieze on the bolts so there will be no issues.

New thermostat works great tho...

@nohuri : thank you.

The definition of pissed : Trying to fit and adjust your front doors and realizing the guy that painted your truck painted the door hinges that are bolted onto the truck and also realizing that I have a 1/4 inch to adjust the doors.

My whole build has stopped quickly in its tracks. I have a severe case of the grrrs right now.

Problem : Poor attention to detail by the 'old' body shop guy.

Solution : Contacted my bro whose an amazing body/paint man and shared my situation with him. He is going to hook me up and paint the doors and hinges correctly.

I also am going to replace the rear quarters with new sheet metal. They are a little wavy and I couldn't live with it, but since we have the paint gun out I'm going to have him take care of that as well.

Also going to strip it back down and have all the hinges repainted. The front hood, fenders, and aprons repainted as well. Just not a good enough job from the previous body guy. Anyway my build and pics will proceed and hopefully in a couple weeks I can finish my list and enjoy this cruiser for a bit.

I get fixing the doors and hinges so they are correctly installed, but why go through cutting out the quarters on a nicely painted truck if you're just going to sell it? If you planned to keep it forever it would be one thing, but it looks better than 75% of 40's I've ever seen (and I've been in this hobby for a long time).

Nice looking 40 :)

I had to go back through the whole thread again and reread it because your sig line was confusing me! So let me get this straight:

-You started out with a '73 w/ a V8. Painted it red (hence the red in your sig line).
-You then acquired a '78 w/ a toasted tub. You swapped the red '73 tub onto the (I guess yellow?) '78 frame. So now what used to be a yellow '78 is now a red '78 chassis w/ '73 body.
-You sold the '73 rolling chassis (did you include the shot '78 body with that rolling chassis?).
-You took the '73 wiring harness and brought it over to the '78 chassis.
-EDIT: you used the '78 tire carrier on the '73 body

I was so confused why the red FJ40 w/ the V8 would have an idle circuit solenoid? :p

You know what your right I need to absolutely close this thread because the original truck is long gone and create a new one for the 78. I can see how its confawking fusing...

I will recreate build thread so it all makes sense.

The story is :

Original 73 truck w/v8 and tub are sold.

I bought the 78 (yellow) truck and the tub was toast. The truck sale came with a 72 tub and I replaced the rotted out 78 tub (yellow) with the 72 tub. Painted it all red and put it together.

The 72 tub has bad rear quarters so I'm cutting those back out and replacing with new metal and hence new paint as well. Since I'm already doing that will paint the doors and front end of the truck because of some things that bother me.

Again will recreate a build thread for this 78 truck since the 73 is sold...nothing like bleeding a bunch of information together and hoping it will make sense.

Thanks for the heads up.
