What is a transmission crossmember?I'm looking for a 4-speed transmission crossmember for a swap from a 3-speed. Thanks
Good morning. I was using AI so maybe there isn't one. It had mentioned a transmission crossmember which I assume braces the transmission on the frame. The cruiser I'm working on had the tranny and TC removed. My other cruiser has a V8 adaptor with a cross brace that bolts to the power take off output shaft and then bolts to the frame. It's been my experience that Co-pilot AI lacks a lot of info and is generous in its misinformation. It mentioned two types, a V-shaped brace for 3-speeds and a flat pan w/ a u-shape type for 4-speed. I'd be happy if I didn't need one. It also has said that the 3-speed was part of the frame so no part number. It also said that I would need to access one from 1975 on or that perhaps a universal crossmember could be locatedWhat is a transmission crossmember?

I think I'd fire your AI. On a stock 55 the bell housing mounts hold up the tranny and TC. Advance Adapters (AA) makes a "propeller" type of crossmember that bolts to the rear of the TC and the frame, I've got one because of the extra length of my drivetrain due to the doubler but you won't need one for just a 4 speed. 60 series might use a crossmember, I don't know.I was told I'd need one from 1975-1980
That's the problem with co-pilot; it leads you down a primrose path and when you point out a mistake it agrees and makes another string of questionable steps. Good to know it was a hallucination. Thanks for the heads up. It currently has me looking for a grounding screw for the right turn signal somewhere behind the instrument panel (I've chased it to there at least). I'm still working through all the electrical connecters, so I had to tear it down anyway.I think I'd fire your AI. On a stock 55 the bell housing mounts hold up the tranny and TC. So far, AI has led me to a couple of dead ends, but it is very confident, until you point out that it's wrong. I have a Haynes I've been using and I've gone to the FSN, but it doesn't cover swaps. U-tube's pretty limited. When I parked the rigs there weren't too many resources. This site has been a gold mine. I'm working on cleaning up the electrical, tearing down the shifter assembly getting ready to send the transmission/TC away to rehab. I'll be looking for the skid plate down the road. I'm just trying to get it mechanically sound. It's going to be a long haul. . .I wonder if it meant a skid plate? Your best bet is asking questions in here and getting an FSM.
