Hi.
I just buy a HDJ80 with a 1hd-ft engine. Very nice car. It have 557k on the clock. There is one big issue... It will not go over 2600 rpm. I have been testing the wastegat it moves fine and the car pull very fine from the bottom and open to 2600 rpm with a little smoke. With the clutch down it will go to max 2800 rpm.
What can be the problem? Can it be fuel filter or the fuel pump?

Hi.
Yes the floor is clear and the last inch off the pedal is not reaction.
I have just notes that is sound like the turbo is stalling when I give it full pedal.

The first thing I would check would be the injection pump throttle linkage in the engine compartment to ensure that you are getting movement from the idle screw to the maximum screw. Have a friend in the vehicle push the throttle down, motor off, and with you in the engine compartment see if indeed there is full throttle available.

If the linkage movement is good, then definitely dive into replacing the fuel filter, and even the fuel sock in the tank, as that may be clogged.

Also check that all vacuum lines are good and working right with the VSV valves.

Only after eliminating the above potential issues would I dive into the more complex possibilities such as the turbo or pump adjustments.

I have checked the throttle linkage and that is fine. I have also been checking the filter in the fuel tank and it was totally clean.

What is the VSV valve, and where is it placed?

Yesterday I read something about there is some protection of the engine when you are in 1st gear then the engine will not be possible to get max rpm. Is there a switch or solenoid what cut of something to in the fuel pump or something else there can cut of high rpm. It is exactly at 2800 rpm.

There is nothing to limit power in 1st gear with the 1hd_ft. ,was a feature of later models with 1hd-fte (electronic injection)

Good suggestions above. Also check the intake is clear and air filter is good.

When the power cuts out, does it sputter or stumble or blow smoke at all? You may have air getting into the fuel system.

It have 557k on the clock

They are high klms and they often need pump/turbo rebuilds long before then. Is it an automatic, they sometimes cause problems with max power.

Yesterday I changed fuel filter and checking the wastegate. It moves fine.
I run the engine whiteout airfilter and hose. The linkage on the pump is fine and when I give full throttle the turbo still selling. Tomorrow I get a new front muffler to the exhaust. I will try start the engine whiteout exhaust to see if the exhaust is blocked.

I have just dismounted the exhaust after the turbo. It did not help. So it is not the exhaust there is blocked. Unfortunately I think it is the injector or the pump. :-(

The linkage on the pump is fine and when I give full throttle the turbo still selling.

What do you mean that the "turbo is still selling"? You've tried revving via the IP linkage rather than using the gas pedal, and the revs are still limited to 2600?

Oh sorry. Wrong spelling. I mean the turbo is stalling. It sputter and stumble when I give it throttle. Even when I do it directly on the pump it won't go higher than 2600 rpm. And I can feel that there is more throttle back in the pump when the engine stop taking rpm.

I had an issue last year with my HJ75 - 2H running a turbo .... It also stalled out and smoked

It turned out to be just valve play, after gaping/adjusting the valves and changing a few valve guides it ran a lot better ..

The some of the mechanical VE pumps do run a power valve that limits power/torque in 1st and reverse. It's on the back of the pump and is vacuum operated. I remove them altogether when overhauling the pumps as they do cause problems but it would be low power overall and not missing. Hard to tell from your video but do you have white smoke? Restricted rpm and white smoke can indicate a fuel restriction. Tried pumping your hand primer to see if it picks up rpm? If so under the inlet banjo there is most likely a inlet screen (not always easy to spot). It blocks overtime from filter fluff. Remove it. If it's blocked this will sort your problem. There are other pump related issues that could cause white smoke and a miss but I'd be starting there.

@Jan Danielsen I'm assuming/hoping you've got the exhaust disconnected from the turbo in this video? It really does sound like it's hitting a governor of some sort, I'm stumped.

To be clear, when this happens you've still got more throttle movement available, but the engine just stumbles and won't rev past 2600rpm? It sounds fine at idle, so that's good I guess.

If it MISSFIRING and WHITE smoking it's running out of speed/dynamic advance. Most commonly it's a fuel supply issue either before or at the pump. If that wasnt the case then is possible to have worn advance bore, worn timer piston, stuck roller cage, lobes missing on your camplate etc but those issues are diffenately rarer than say a fuel supply issue. If you had limited rpm and black smoke then that's a different story.
