How difficult is it to change the cam seals on a 3 lt.
I have been told it is fairly simple but I don't know the procedure.. I have ran some searches but can't find anything in any kind of detail.
I don't have a source of a FSM so I am hoping you guys can throw out some detail on the procedure.
I am very capable with the wrenches I just don't want to dive into something blind and possibly F things up
And pics or video would even be more helpful.

You might ask over in the diesel forum.

This is a 3lt in a SR5 1989
I'm loosing a substantial amount of oil from the rear of the head and was told it was the cam seal.

Screwing around on Toyo DIY this morning I was looking at this.

I didn't know your model specific info... didn't even know there was a 3L-T in 89 actually.
I see some plugs in the front and back of the head, probably press fit coolant passages though.
Who knows, good luck if you dive in there I could dig around more in manuals later.

Okay guys this is not a diesel its a gasser 3Lt I know my sign throws you off ....yes I am a diesel guy but I do resort to driving the odd gasser don't like it harder to work on than a diesel I wished Mr T had more diesel models like the big 3 and others.

Then your engine designation is probably wrong. The L-series engine is a diesel, and there was a 3L. Sounds like you need to give us more information about the vehicle.

There were two engines offered in the USA in 1989 in the mini-trucks. The 22RE 4-cylinder, and the 3VZ-E V6 (or 3.slow). So let's start over.

hahaha nice. I think he's talking about a 3.0 LITRE engine and not the 3L diesel so I'm out :P

Cam plugs however are not really that complicated, hardest part I foresee is access to the rear of the cylinder head.
Front seal is remove cam gear... replace seal?

Okay more specific it is the 3VZ-E V6 1989 SR5 Xtra cab 5spd 4x4
I think I have pieced enough snippets of information to tackle this.
It is my rear seal on driver side and what I believe is correct is I remove the valve cover and possibly remove the 2 bolts to the cap on the end of the cam this will give me access to pry out the seal with a pick or similar tool without scratching the metal surfaces and squeeze /or tap in the new seal with some grease applied to the seal to help it slide on smoothly.
I will be using OEM seal to get proper fitment.
