Will an 88 3FE mate to a 60 four speed bellhousing? I know an H55 5 speed would be the set up to have, but have the 4 speed.

I did a write up on doing such in the 60s section a few 6 or 7 years ago...YES, they mate, but the later year 3FEs require larger diameter flywheel bolts, and special flywheel bolts, at that. the earlier 3FE bolts right up. 3FE is a badass motor- far too underplayed next to the F and 2F. with the manual gearbox, it's like a nascar

we've been daily driving the 4 speed fj62 since before 2011. sure, 5 speed would be the business, but, the 4 is still worth it.

Hey Pablo, what did you do about the fuel tank and pump?

So the 88 fj62 I looked at was riddled with rust . Especially the rear section of frame. Decided to pass at $1200 mainly due to the rust issues. Guess I just bought it though for a much lower price. Could be a lot of useable parts before it goes to scrap yard. Thinking the whole drivetrain could go into my 78 55. This addiction is taking over.

I thought that is why you were asking - you were envisioning the 3FE going into your Pig!
There are lots of details in my build thread - see link in my signature.
I used the 4-spd and bellhousing from my Pig. IIRC, the bellhousing has mounts for the Pig frame, and a later 60 series bellhousing will not. The passenger side front engine mount I believe need to be a combo of Pig & 3FE in order to accommodate the AC compressor.

I think I cover this in my build thread, getting to be a few years ago!
I used the Pig tank and an inline electric fuel pump near the tank. I pre-filter the pump with a clear plastic low-pressure filter, then a high pressure filter post-pump. I also learned (the hard way) the importance of confirming that the return line is clear and flows adequate volume!

Here is a picture of the mounts:

So rethinking the purchase of the 88 62 series. I already have an om617 Mercedes diesel with adapter and a Toyota 5 speed. Use the money from the 62 purchase to add soundproofing or ??

Still sitting on the fence about buying the 88. A lot of useable parts for sure.

sensible me says to move on. unless it will be offering its goodness to your project, or unless you want to get it and put it back on the road, then it is just a distraction. otherwise, a lot of good usable parts turns into "cmon guys, I thought this stuff was worth something"... hth

I might add, however, I am not all that sensible.

I’m not that sensible either. In this case I should be as I do not need anymore distractions. Way to much frame delamination to think about putting it back on the road. Pulling parts would be more time consuming than I care to devote to the endeavor.
