BAD VSV!!

Just did the FSM check and it was bad, so I pulled a spare from my part box and I'll go for a test drive in the am. I guess I'll go ahead and check the EGR and all the VSV valves. I'll report back on Sunday.

Speed Sensor
I fretted over this for many months. Some folks said it wasn’t needed. Some said it was
required. The documentation I had was vague. So, while at the boneyard I pulled the
speedometer from an FJ62 and took it home. I then hooked up my multi-meter, set it to
continuity/beep, and spun the speedometer. It pulsed four times per revolution.
I had already acquired the VSS for the Autometer electronic speedometer. It consisted of a
16-pulse square wave VSS and a custom cable to connect to the transfer case. What I needed
for the ECU was a reed-switch type VSS that produced 4 pulses. The ECU VSS runs
piggyback with the speedometer VSS (Fig. 9). Again, my fretting was for nothing. The
company that provided both VSS’s and cable was Speedometer Service Co., Milwaukee, WI,
414/463-6660.

Went for a test drive this am, it was the same, replacing the VSV was not it.
I did notice the smog pump was making noise, so I'll check that also, and Iam still planning on adding the VSS.

Did you ever check the fuel pump pressure?

What type of pump is on the FJ40? Or did you modify the tank for a intake pump off the FJ62?

Hey Tom,

Funny I was just reading some posts about your old 3FE over at Pirate.

I using a after market fuel pump rated at 45psi, I think it's the MSD2225? Iam in the process of rounding up a fuel pressure gauge, and installing it. I really don't think it fuel related, but won't know 100% untill I have a gauge installed. Iam using the same set up that pappy suggested in his 3FE fj40 build. He is running a VSS, Iam not, so that's why I think this is the issue.

The Speedo cable with the new VSS is being built as we speak, and I should have that installed later this week. Then I can rule that out.

For some reason I don't think it's the speed sensor, or lack of. I was going to suggest TPS since I had two bad boneyard units, but I see above you have a new one. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? As far as fuel pressure, if you have fuel returning to the tank you should be good. Backfiring could be a timing issue. How is your cap/rotor, and your wires?

List out what you have done thus far short and sweet so everyone can eliminate it of the list of what abouts...And not hijacking but does anyone have a 62 diagram for the reverse lights? or tell me what colors they are? Need to wire them up to my B&M.

When you checked for vacuum leaks did you also check near and around the intake? Just curious. When you get tired of beating yourself up, Bring her up I am sure a couple beers and 10 min worth of work would fix it!

Chris I have a FSM for a FJ62, I get that info too you today.

Here is a quick list of what has been done:

New tank and all fuel lines
new 3/8 larger dia fuel supply lines to engine
full tune up and timing was set
new TPS, TB cleaned and set dead on while on the workbench
new o2 sensors - (they look very new)
All the little sensors in the t-stat housing are new
new hoses and t-state
all oils and fluids have been changed
I have run sea foam thru the injectors

Air Flow Meter? Have you checked wiring connections (I ask as I just "solved" a high idle on my truck when I checked the TPS, but I think it was the connection rather than the adjustment)

YES - I've checked the AFM, and even swapped it out for a spare I had.

Got the VSS in today. I ordered it from Speedometer Service Co., Milwaukee, WI,
414/463-6660. Thanks to Pappy for suggesting them. Two day service and they really knows there stuff. They split my fj40 cable, made a custom VSS, and rebuilt the lower half of the worn out speedo cable. $174.00

I've installed the VSS. The truck started right up and purred, idle fine. Went for a drive, and no more stalling. So one problem is solved. The power is back, but not 100%.

I still think I have a issue with the fuel pump and fuel pressure. It's not pressure when sitting in the garage, but in real world driving. I've replaced the FPR, so I don't think that is it. I guess I could install a fuel pressure gauge..but it would have to be in the dash so I could watch it while I drive.

I was driving on flat streets, and I started to loose power, so I pulled over, turned off the car and sat for about 30 seconds. Started it back up and had full power, so Iam thinking the fuel pump is not keeping up with the pressure. Then on a large hill, again, a loss of power, So again fuel pump issue???

This is a new OEM FJ40 tank, so no rust issues.

I changed all the hoses from the fuel pump to the engine to 3/8 line. But did not change the OEM hose from the tank to the fuel filter and then to the pump. I have a full tank off gas, and did not feel like draining it. I guess those hoses might be restricting the flow??

I don't know the brand of Fuel pump the previous owner used, but everyone else seems to use the MSD2555 Electric fuel pump. I guess Iam going to drain the tank and buy a new pump so I can eliminate these issues, also.

Update.

I've put in a MSD fuel pump, and decided to check the timing.

It seems that, just like the my FJ62 - someone had put the dizzy in wrong. So I tossed the timing light aside and just tuned buy listing to the engine. I also played with the "Golden Screw" on the TB.

I set the timing a little high..around 1000 rpm, and went for a test drive.

WOW - great hot rod power, and no stalling up hill! After about a 10 minute drive I did have one little stall while sitting at a stop light, but a little play with the clutch solved it. SO I think Iam on the right path.

Then I did a few searches here in IH8mud and found that it's a common mistake to install the dizzy a tooth or so off, and the problem people were having is the same problem I've been having. So when I thought I was at TDC, I was not.

A good reason why I try not to assume it was correct before I get into it. That is how I timed the 62 before you got it back. SO LET'S GO WHEELIN!! I know a couple people who have a hotrod being delivered.
