I've searched until my fingers bled, but can't find a post I thought I read by @FJ40Jim answering this question. I'm thinking I read there was some advantage to using the 3FE rear main in a 2FE (mine is a later FJ60 block), or if someone had one on hand and just wanted to make sure it would fit. Jim or anyone have some insight?
s*** @beno , now I am confused which 2F seal I need to order. The bottom end of this 2F I bought from another club member, I don't know exact build dates. It has PS pump bosses, but that doesn't tell me anything in this instance. Is there anything that can be gleaned from the block stampings to determine which seal I need? Maybe that's why this thing is leaking like a sieve after a fresh rebuild anyway. Thanks, as always for the awesome info!
Your question has been answered but I'll add this in. You can stuff a 2F rear main seal onto/into the 3FE cavity but it will not last but a few miles. I went through this experience and don't recommend it.

And when I was stuffing it in I knew something was wrong but I proceeded anyway. I had gone in to order a 3FE rear main but my local Toyota parts guy gave me the 2F seal instead because he was accustomed to me ordering 2F parts. Once I sorted out the issue I returned to the dealership with that info and the parts guy provided the correct seal. Simple mistake, messy and time consuming fix. Crap happens. This happened years before Beno or CDan.
