Hello,

My 1992 80 Series with a 3FE is having some issues.

It started a few months ago when it would very very rarely have trouble starting. It would turnover fine, but only idle for a second or two before dying. It would usually take two or three attempts to start before it stayed running.
Progressively this problem seemed to happen a little more often, but I could always get it running after a few attempts.
Now the car is dying on me while driving. I have noticed a few times before it shuts down that the idle gets rough, but sometimes there is no indication.

I recently tried swapping out the AFM but I believe the replacement part was no good because it when I tried starting the engine it would shut off even quicker than before and I could never get it to run. I put the old part back in and it actually felt great and ran strong for a day. When swapping out the parts I noticed the old AFM it had a small bit of oil pooled up that I cleaned out with a rag.

A day later and I am still having the same issue. Car is shutting off while driving and having trouble to stay running.

Thank you in advance.

You have a 35 year old vehicle.
At this point you need to be physically confirming (not assuming) that everything involved with running the engine is in correct working order per the FSM (Factory service manual).
Open the FSM and go step by step on the diagnostic procedure for each system. It has all of the information to repair your vehicle. There is no need to guess and throw parts at it, which unless you have a known perfectly running parts donor to borrow from, will get expensive fast and waste time.

After downloading the Toyota FSM and EWD from the resources section, check the rubber intake tube for tears or cracks.

Post this in the Old North State clubhouse. There are plenty of folks in the Raleigh south area that can help you.

My 3FE started doing this on a camping trip in the middle of the desert, a bit concerning. Found the intake tube cracked. Wrapped some gorrilla tape on it and got home. Ordered new from City Racer.

But yeah any intake leak = unmetered air which can act this way.
