Hello landcruiser family, I am a 19 year old from Washougal Washington, right next to Portland Oregon. New to ih8mud as someone suggested I post my problem here and I would love some input on my baby 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser with the 3fe engine. Long story short, I took it to the sand dunes, and while I was driving, the car gave out on me. It sounded like it misfired a few times and just gave out. The truck will now crank, but won’t start. I stayed a few extra nights at the dunes and checked fuel lines, replaced the fuel pump, checked the maf sensor, checked relays, checked the fuse link, and after 2 days of almost ripping my hair out I decided to just tow it back home. I had a mechanic take a look at it and he tested it, the codes came up as airflow meter and manifold pressure sensor. But he said these codes won’t stop a car from starting so those can’t be the problem. He basically told me the cam shaft is cooked. He didn’t tell me much other than that. Now I’m in a pickle and I have no idea what next steps to make. I bought the truck because I heard the engine is bullet proof… and 2 weeks into owning it it gave out on me. It was driving perfectly fine like a charm and then just broke down. It’s at 199500 miles, original engine and everything. If anyone can provide any help at all or just give me advice I would greatly greatly appreciate it. I’m not at all in the financial place to completely rebuild the engine, and I have zero experience with engines so replacing the camshaft would be a fun project, but how can I even know that’s for sure the problem before I go taking apart my 3fe? I appreciate yall in advance.

You don't have a MAF, you have a VAF - similar function, very different method of operating.
Is the VAF stopping it from running? Don't know, there's several tests in the FSM to determine a faulty VAF. Give it a whiff of aerostart with someone else cranking the engine, if it fires you've got spark. If it doesn't, likely an ignition issue.
We tried that. It didn’t start. So it’s likely an ignition issue? Like a timing thing? Or you mean like a spark plug issue? Thanks man

Well, those are the codes the mechanic told me. I don’t have a code reader for this car. But I know for sure there’s an airflow meter code. Do you think the no start issue could be the MAF? I don’t wanna keep throwing parts at it without a second opinio, thank you
I'm getting tired of asking you to answer the most basic questions that have been asked by several folks trying to help you since you started this thread.
This is the last time I will ask, then I'm out. I've raised 2 kids. I don't need another.

Hey man, I’m sorry I hit a nerve, that wasn’t my intention, I might be retarded but what question are you talking about? I’ve answered all the questions if you scroll up, and you didn’t ask a question or answer the question that I just replied to you. I was asking questions to you since you were answering, from yesterday’s findings.

Did you download and read the 3FE EFI diagnostic?

Do you have spark?

Answer all questions please.

Did you do this??

Same idea. Did you do this?
I will try all this today. I did do the diagnosis. The efi is fine, but I did buy a new fusible link just because it’s cheap and I might aswell. I did have spark. I do have fuel. I’m going to try cranking the distributor today aswell. Thank you

Sorry that’s my bad I got you confused with someone else, I just answered your questions from before.

You don't need a code reader, all you need is a bent paper clip or short piece of wire and the FSM. As it has been pointed out multiple times you need to read the FSM, Factory Service Manual.

The codes that are coming up are Airflow meter and Manifold pressure sensor
You need to be specific regarding error codes and the FSM will show you how to read them using a small piece of wire or a paperclip.
Every error code has a 2 digit number. There about 6 different codes that could involve the AFM.

There are no codes for a "manifold pressure sensor" because this engine doesn't have one. Can we please move away from that.

Please download and read through the Toyota factory service manual (FSM) which, once again, you can DOWNLOAD FOR FREE from the resources section.

Please find another "mechanic" or reach out to a local LC group in your area for recommendations.
There is no OBD1 code for "manifold pressure sensor", considering there is no manifold pressure sensor on a 3FE.

What @Godwin posted is true, and it has happened. However it is extremely rare.
The distributor rotor is driven from the cam shaft. Pop the cap off the dissy and crank the starter. If the rotor spins, things look promising.

Please read through this document.
Hey so I did this with the distributor, it looks like it’s skipping or stopping for a second. Does this mean it could be the gear? I’m going to also try taking off the valve cover and see if it’s also bugging before working on the timing m
