3B in a 4Runner, I did it! A few questions now...

do you think there would be clearence issues with an IFS 4runner and a 3b?

If you saw the first pic you will se a SAS for this Runner so no IFS issues with the 3B.

sas

well i know he has an SAS, so he didn't have any ifs clearence issues, but i was asking to see if he thought there would be any clearence issues since he has seen a 3B in a 4runner's engine bay and i haven't.

what did you do for the added engine weight?
what rad did you use?
a 3B in a 4humper sounds cool, go buy a camera and get some pics up.

personally, i never thought it would work due to the height of the 3B and the weight issues...glad i was proven wrong...

lets revive this thread... Nice work Huck, i'm considering the same thing here with another 4skinner with a cracked 22RE head. I've got a spare set of BJ70 axles/3B and 4 speed. I'd like to see more of your fab-up from the bellhousing/tranny etc...
Cheers!

good luck. Nothing has been posted. I will believe when I see it.

Saw the truck at Cruiser Days 07. I do know the truck changed owners since. Was for sale again a while back.
Didn't look too close at the swap but it required some creative clearancing to move the rad forward, and a weird looking custom hood. Here is a link that shows some pics that a club member took:

well there actually was another thread where he was having troubles with blowing trannies. but that's with the stock runner tranny.

it'll fit Dan....trust me....

yeah i was curious how the minitruck trans held up. Just tired of the goofy offset cruiser rear ends and next to no doubler options--or ease of at least--. Anyhow, there's no doubt in my mind it'll fit, i've got it all just sitting here, only needs a little time and some beer motivation. Seapotato's got some spare time in the next few weeks...LOL

my 85 with the stock g52 hooked to a 300 hp 351 windsor and 39.5 tsls is holding up great .. i dont see why the 3bt shouldnt

sure, I can sit and watch, drink yer beer, maybe hand over the occasional tool and pearl of wisdom...

like, "man, bet that's heavy...":flipoff2:

Great, mine setup was daily driven (hard) for about 30,000km before catestrophic failure. Keep in mind with the 3b i could lug the tranny in ways the 22re couldn't.

the first tranny got really noisey in a hurry. i swapped it out after about 3,000km. the second tranny got noisey too, but i kept daily driving it for about 30,000 km until it blew up in the george massey tunnel. (Changed from 2nd to 3rd, jumped out of third so hard, somehow the rear end (locked 4cyl third) blew up at the same time). There were chipped teeth on the countershaft in the tranny!

anyway- thanks for the positive feedback! i haven't had this truck for almost 2 years, rolled it in pemberton... bought some other stuff. the guy i sold it to is still not finished rebuilding it, but he's doing a real nice job, whereas i threw it together during a week off in xmas 2006 and drove the s*** out of it.

the build stock stuff, unless otherwise stated:

-'85 4runner, efi, 5spd
-'85 3B supposedly out of a "Landcruiser pickup" i guess he meant mine truck, (wrecker in Fort Erie, ON)
-4runner rad recored to 4 rows (hacked tanks)
-rotrod hoses
-3b fan+clutch (but a 2 row and 22re fan worked in a pinch one time after wheeling)
-EFI in tank fuel pump delete ) so the mechanical injection pump can pull through
-3" lift, soild front axle (more lift the better for oil pan clearance,
with IFS?- nothings impossible but why?)
-hysteer with bent/hacked links for oil pan clearance
-hood modified to clear valve cover)
-exhaust on other side, had made, no problems there
-3b powersteering pump, starter, alternator, vacuum res., water sep, etc.
-dual batteries (in place of air box)
-push botton glow
-no edic, to kill the motor i had a choke cable setup to the injection pump
-LC air box too big, played with s***ty tuner filters on my snorkel before going to roof mounted Donaldson industrial aircleaner in the end
-custom engine mounts on frame and block
-3b/h42 clutch (21 spline, just like the w56 tranny!)
-w56 5spd tranny using modified* cast iron bellhousing from H42 4spd
-h42 clutch cylinder (also opposite side)
-dual stock t cases to locked 4runner axles, 4.10 gears, 33" tires

Bellhousing details: measured the length i needed for the w56 input shaft, bucked the tranny side of the bellhousing off, milled square, drilled and dowelled the bolt pattern for the w56 into a 3/8" plate, which i bolted to the tranny, inserted the tranny and input shaft into a tight fitting jigging sleve i turned, which was bolted onto the flywheel spigott on the crankshaft (flywheel not yet installed). This ensured both concentricity and axial alignment of the input shaft to the crankshaft, and at this time i welded the plate that i had earlier bolted to front of the tranny to the back of my shortened h42 bellhousing, which was of course bolted to the engine. That is how i kept everying cocentric and square. i did a kickass job welding because it never broke:flipoff2:PS w56 input fits 3b pilot too, but i remember the trickiest part was figuring out where to put the pivot for the h42 clutch fork. Got it right the first time, good function and feel.

The trannies didn't like my heavy right foot or the constant lugging the motor could dish out, and after the major failure i swapped in an h42. The reason i didn't do that before was because i had dual mintruck cases (center rear output) and didn't want to loose them to a 4 spd and single reduction offset crusier case. I didn't have h55f money so bought an h42 and bellhousing, and a beefier v6 minitruck rear diff, and a toybox adpater from marlin crawler. the adpater lets you run minitruck dual cases on the back of an h42. pretty serious mod tho, for the front tcase i had to bore the housing out for bigger bearings to take a bigger diameter female input shaft. On the h42, i had to change the countershaft. It took me more than a day just to big the drivetrain. Mike @ Marlin told me to run dual cases on an h55f is trickier due to oiling issues, and requires even more custom tranny work- lots of patience.

Then a month later I rolled it in Pemberton, broke my wrist, crushed the cab. Kicked it over and drove it home, it sold to the first kid the came to see it for asking price.

i was a damn kid when i did this at nights after work in my friends dads shop. i did a hack job and wheeled the fxxx out of it- It wheeled good. With the skills, knowlege and tools i have now, I could do a way better job- but would i? only if it were for a customer. I wheel less due to other interests, and when i do, i roll in a hdj81. it has a beer fridge and other cool s***.
