im looking into a 1983 BJ42 with a 3B Diesel, is there anything better that diesel engines have rather the f/2f engines?

Good bottom end torque, more than double the fuel mileage on road, and usually even better off road. I love 'em. They sure work hard on the highway though.

whats the top speed for a 3b if it has a 5speed tranny?

Put a turbo on it, and the question becomes moot.

Even normally aspirated the question isn't top speed, rather how much it decelerates going up hills or from a stop.

Our 3B/turbo/H55f truck keeps up with traffic beautifully.

so even on the highway itv can keep up with traffic? That would be terrific news

Well, noooot really. It really depends who you ask to. It is slow, not doubt. BUT a turbo fix all that very well. Can it keep up with traffic?, i would say yes up to 65 mph. But passing is a other story!

If you do find a 1983 3B LHD, let us know!!!

EDIT: i just notice you ask about top speed, this mean you are concerns with performance, then a 3B is NOT for you.

I picked up an 83 with a 3B turbo a few months ago and use it as a dd. Hills are NO problem, top speed is 60-65 which is fine. I have the 4 speed, stock 3.7 gears and 32s. For the street the gear/tire combo is great. If I had the H55 freeway driving would be even better... but that's not why I bought this.

Have you driven one yet? if not go drive one before you decide to buy it for a daily driver. Not a 5 minute drive around the block. Go for hour and hit the highway. I wouldn't personnaly daily drive a BJ42, turbo or not.

Well im looking for a daily driver
I figured the 3B has better mileage, so im trying to find one

Good advice.

I DD'd a BJ42 for a couple years. In fact I've been doing so again for the last month as my BJ73 is broken, sigh. I didn't mind it. California has slow highways, however - in Texas or the Midwest I'm really not sure it'd be much fun.

But you'll be a speed bump, they are not highway machines. Without a turbo, and with a 4 speed you'd be limited by RPM to 60mph or less... you can go faster but you'd be cruising over 3000RPM and the noise of a 3B at that speed goes from pleasant to, er, stressed.

The 5 speed will buy you some more wiggle room, up to nearly 70, but then you'll be limited by exhaust temp and the sheer terror of controlling a 40-series at >70mph. :)

Any time there is a hill or up-grade, really no matter how slight, you'll either lose your ability to hold those speeds or your EGTs will skyrocket.

Add a turbo and the EGT and hill concern goes away. Merging and lane changing become easier. But its still a 40 series.

Im planning on adding the turbo regardless, also, I don't drive highways much
and I have driven 3 40's but not the diesel yet. I figured it was the same?
Thank you for all the information!

In North America, all diesel built after 1983 (40, 60, 70) are 5 spd and all diesel 40 are 4.11.

Is your is a FJ40 or FJ60 w/3B swap ?

long life

I would say long life. Yes, they work hard at highway speeds but thats normal.

Check the compression and oil pressure before buying. I constantly get passed on hills ohh well.

I have 425kms on my truck. Got lazy and did not change the oil after 30k but it did not affect it. Used seafoam to clean out any hidden varnish in the engine. Used seafoam in filter now the fuel economy is better then ever.

The engine and transmission will most likely outlast the frame and body.

How.did you use the seafoam to clean?
I think the 42 im looking at was imported
Im hoping on a low cost.

Sorry, it's an 83 FJ60 that has a Canadian drivetrain swapped in with a turbo added. So, it's safe to say that the engine is at least as old as the rest of the truck?

I’m trying to find a 3b for my fj62 desperately.

FYI ... This is a 10 year old thread. For an FJ62 I'd be looking for a turboed HZ or a 1HD-T variant both for driveability as well as part availability.
