35's vs. 37's

I agree, the '80 does well for a station wagon/bus, but there are a lot of places here where it wont fit, also it's hard to beat gravity and 5000lb+ doesn't help. The trend here is to small and light, it's amazing what they can do.

This is a local home built rig, I guess it could be called a mini, it has a 22R? I don't care what meats and gears are on an '80, it's not going to hang with rigs like this!:hillbilly:

agreed. sweet little crawler there. the 80 will never be a buggy. cant hang with a FLEXY mini either. if a herd of buggys are going out i wont join that crew on that day.

but in my experience the 80 in oe form with 35's will hang with:

fj40's--80 out wheels them most days

minis--if they are running stiff springs and 35 or less tires the 80 will hang. the 80 has more power and will bump its way to success. if the 80 can drive it will get there easy. with lower gears the 80 is great. thanks only to the soft rear end

mini with soft suspension and 37s"--hard to beat. however mine will beat it most days :D

Yep, the plan is to leave on the 25th, doing some touring on the way so arriving in Moab Tue night. I'm only signed up for Spike on Thur.

My 37's arrive tomorrow :grinpimp:

Dusty, you should post up specs on your 60's here, including how you got proper diff offset. A lot of folks here need to move to at least a heavier duty front axle and probably rear with ARB's, and you can drop over $10K on Dynatrac ProRocks or you can find boneyard 60's and build yourself, and there are options in the middle.

My 80 has to stay nicely streetable, so I am never going huge as my rig mostly performs a family function (which includes family crawling :D), but the security of more axle strength plus getting rid of the ridiculous maintenance needs of the 80 stock front end is highly desirable.

Things like blowing up bearings because steering nuts like to fall out is ridiculous, perhaps hi-steer options come into play, R&P strength issues, axle strength issues, etc.

We have no good information on these projects and lots of people who should realistically be pursuing them. Post up

How long before we see a thread titled:

37's vs 39's?

You won't. Everybody who is doing 37's is already moving to 39's in their head :D

(except me - streetability).

Just for argument's sake, a 35" tire on a 16" rim has a 9.5" sidewall.

19" (both sidewalls) + 20" rim = 39"

So, ignoring a slightly higher COG, couldn't a 39" tired truck on 20" rims handle like a 35" tired truck on 16" rims?

(Assuming the same suspension, the 39" tired truck having cut fenders)

I am also ignoring braking performance.

i spent a lot on my d60/70 and they are beef but they are not as cush as the lightweight yota stuff. would have been a lot cheaper to run longfields. ill bet they would have held too if i babied them. only weak point left in the front is the r&p. those 80 fronts are beef. i beat my 80 axles hard and they never failed me on the trail. perhaps someone should cryo an 80 r&p and run 42's. problem is that its hard to baby an 80 cause they are geared too high. you have to bounce them a lot

And i didn't do any measuring to fit the diff offset. a chevy 60 would line up better with the front tcase as the dodge 60 i used is a little too far to the pass side. but the chevy is 2" wider which i think is too wide for this truck and the dodge 60 has bigger inner c's than the chevy. the dodge also has flanges and i prefer them to hubs. i have a full secont set of chevy 60's/14 bolt. want to do yours?
Nay's just trying to justify having ONLY bought 37s for himself. He knows that 39s are the new 37s (Christo said it himself here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/275971-trxus-37s-en-route.html).

We're just behind the curve.:meh:

Did Steve ever end up running 37s?

80s are getting so cheap. they are finally being tested and others will be surprised

46's are the new 39's. This is what I will be wheeling when it gets done. Right now a pile of parts. Nothing like buying yourself a bunch of work.

I don't worry about the strength of my front end, really. I'm not that 'core. The maintenance side is irritating, but a small pumpkin 8" HP diff with excellent build quality and a strong housing is a great front end for a truck like an 80 in the strength v. clearance dept. Depends how you use it.

I know 39's are the new 37's, but I don't care about that. I just don't think 35's are enough tire if you want to avoid bashing it around a lot, just as 37's aren't enough tire if you want to play with buggies, which I don't.

Plus I have 5.29's and they fit. When did people ever stop buying the biggest tire that fits :D?

I have been hearing that 52's are the new 39's?:hillbilly:

Now I know why there are so many 39's for sale on Pirate :D

damn. not much yota left in that demon truck. finally got your rockwells. hope there is a build thread on that thing. did you get it part built or start from scratch?

That's sick Christo. Are you documenting the progress in a thread somewhere or waiting until you are finished. I didn't see anything about it in the hardcore section.

mmmmm Rockwells.
