I really have owned and operated worse Matt...and repaired far worse for other folks.

You know your phone would ring at 3am if I found you something. ;)

If Mike shows up for the wheelin' trip to the range in October, then we will likely be up your way bud.

Steve,

I agree...anything is fixable, but I honestly believe this would be a complete new frame half way back. And.....I might end up fixing it? But, if I can round up a nice decent used one, I would prefer to do that if possible. That would be awesome if my phone rang at 3 am and it was for a 45 lwb frame :D

When is this trip to the range in Oct.? Link? You never know, might drive over that way myself?

Thanks, Matt

thumpthump....thumpthump.....I hear life being breathed back into that frame.
There are a ton of 40 frames out there. Bet you could cut sections out of one and rivet the thing back to life.

Took about 64 minutes from pulling all of my crap out to the blurry pic you see in front of the lpb. And the stand I was talking about accidently fell together.

Hacked up that lawn mower crate using the torch and chop saw. Had the #'s in my head and just started measuring and cutting. 64 minutes later....took the pic.

Not sure when body is coming apart.....got some honey do stuff to do..., but the wife is out of town this weekend? Maybe that body willl accidently come off this Saturday ;)

It could happen....I've got 2 - 40 frames just sitting here waiting to be sacrificed for the good of another cruiser :)

But.....I would prefer to just get a nice, clean used one. I still believe that is going to happen.

Thanks, Matt

This isn't a pic of my rig, but I have the same bolt on each side holding the cab on the rear.

Does this bolt go all the way to the top inside the cab? Or is it a welded stud?

Thinking of torching it off, just wondering how it is attached? If it is a stud might be a pain in the ass to replace, if it is a bolt.....easy....

Thanks, Matt

I am assuming it is a bolt, there is a hex head at the top (red arrow) that can be accessed through the hole in the back of the cab (blue arrow)

However, I have never been able to get either of mine to budge. I don't have a torch, but maybe with some heat they might let go of their grip.

Really looking forward to watch you get started on your truck.

Got a little over an hour on the lpb tonight. It just totally amazes me how certain areas of it are in such great condition and others..........well.....

Anyway, wife had me do a few things and had to leave for a bit....so there I was staring at it? I had stuff to do on the lv, but the the truck was calling me? I really debated on doing anything also? I have been driving it to work everyday this week, it runs like a top, drives great and is fun to turn heads....whether it's because its different or so rusty :)

But, my impatience prevailed and away I went. Drug out a couple tools and started working on the front. Hood bolts came out great. The 4 frame fender bolts came out great except for 1 that busted. Had to remove a ball joint in front to get the lower left 2 fender bolts out. Popped off a bunch of wires and took some photo's for later reference. Was getting dark so called it a night. Going to fire up the torch tomorrow night and torch the 2 - 6mm bolts on each lower rear fender tomorrow night. Also torch the bumper bolts off so I can get at the front bib bracket bolts. Remove those 2 and I'm going to pull the entire front clip off in 1 piece.

Probaby torch the box bolts off tomorrow night and get that off also. If all goes well, going to pull the cab before noon on Saturday and then go after getting the drivetrain out in 1 shot and just set that on a pallet. If I keep going, pull all the springs, shackes, U-bolts and wheels....pretty much get everything stripped down to nothing.

If I had a decent frame I would blast it and get it back into the booth Saturday night and get it into paint.........but.....I don't :frown:

Perfect, thanks for the pic. I guess I'm going to try to un-bolt it, but I'm not going to try that hard.

If it doesn't come.....out comes the gas axe! :)

Thanks, Matt

Yes it does.....bad! :D Needs a frame worse!!

Going to try to take another stab at those P.O.S. CCOT ones I have that I tried on the lv and didn't work. I might have to drill out 50 spot welds on them, but I have them laying around here so would like to see if I can use up some of the product I have laying around. :)

If they don't work, you'll be the first to know ;)

thanks, Matt

buck, few months ago was in grants pass oregon picking up a fj55, the local toyota dealer turned me on a local cruiser mechanic, I think name was John Graves, he had a empty fj45 frame for 600 . I almost brought it home.

We need to find Matt a frame :)

Get it to Colorado or find one in Colorado and I will drive it to MN personally

About the one above....I am having some truck freight shipped from Metal-Tech to me. I can ask Mark how much truck freight on a frame to Denver would be.

Doesn't W have an LBP frame hanging from the roof of his shop? I think he is in Oregon

This is all good people  But, I need contact info :D

Unless you guys are already working on it :)

Thanks a ton.....Matt

Matt, how bad is your frame, any pics?

The 45 I finished last winter also had rough frame as it came from ontario. Moderate scale throughout with some rust through in the supports above the spare tire and in front of the rear spring hangers, my 45 had only 22k miles on it, all spent in a manure pit.

anyway using needle scaler and a hammer bit in an air chisel I went after it hard, torched areas out and then using a curved tip blasting hose, sand blasted whole thing inside and out. the bottom overlapping edge required good bit of work. then using plasma and 1/8 steel I would remake c shaped patchs and weld them back together.

finally POR15 heavily on it. when it was tacky I sprayed 3m paintable undercoating on it from about 2 feet away for a textured appearance, then later that night por chassis black this was to hide the pitting some.

My frame was supposedly a one ton rating and even though it might be a little thinner than it was the day it left the factory I'm sure its thicker than the average CJ frame.
With your incredible skill it might be reasonable to scarf all the rivets, disassemble it, do some repairs and then using cap bolts grade 8 reassemble it, there is a large hole for each one.

Matt,

Those 2 Bolts at the back side of the cab are nut / bolt combo's. I will tell you though i had to cut mine out. They were frozen to the sleeve that was also in there.

Got a solid 3.5 hours on the lpb tonight. Did pretty much what I said I was going to do and a bit more.

Got the front clip off, that went fast. Got the box off, that went about as planned. I torched all 10 box mount bolts off, had to put out a couple fires when that undercoating crap kept starting on fire......all was good with the garden hose. Neighbor came over and gave me a hand removing the box, slid it onto the bi-directional loader and then set it on the stand to move over to set on some saw horses.

I took about an hour and un-hooked everything on the firewall, speedo cable, fuel lines, parking brake cable....etc. It was getting dark, but I wanted to get the cab off. I also didn't want to drag it inside because that fuel and undercoating was making a hell of a mess. My neighbor has a forklift in his shop so we used the bi-directional loader with the pallet forks and his forklift. Used 1 on each side and wood blocks underneath the floor. Lifted it up, rolled out the chassis and set it down on the stand I made. Sorry, no pics of that action, but a couple in the dark of the chassis and cab on the stand.

I'll get some more pics of everything tomorrow, but I plan on getting the drivetrain, axles and anything else bolted to the frame off tomorrow.....see how that goes :)
