Hello All,

I am experiencing some valve tick on my number one exhaust valve and cannot understand why.

The valves are correctly set for lash set at operating temp. When the engine is cold, there is no loud valve noise. However, as the engine is warming up, starting approximately 3 to 4 minutes after cold start, the ticking on this one valve becomes noticeably louder. Once the engine reaches operating temp, the noise goes away again.

Any thoughts on why this valve only makes noise when at mid warm up? Not sure if this matters, but the push rod is spinning significantly faster on this valve.

Thanks.

Sorry, that sounds pretty normal to me. I think mine are louder. It's louder as it warms up? That sounds normal too. Fast pushrod could be a worn lifter or cam lobe, or both. Could be the pushrod, swap it with another to rule that out.

Totally Normal
Mine ticks creeks and moans. Like a old whoore
But runs like a banshee

You want the push rods spinning. Just a guess, the oil is thicker when cold. As it warms up the oil starts thinning. Once the engine is to operating temp the metal has been expanding and the valve lash tightens up and quites down. Thats why they are adjusted hot at operating temp.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. That was something I had considered as well. I am running 20/50. However, I could not explain why only this one valve ticked during warm up. It has been doing this for several years. When I check valve lash periodically over this period, I have not noticed the lash open up at all. As a result, I dont believe I have a cam or lifter issue. I was suspecting the valve was sticking a bit during warm up and then releasing once warm.
