. . . is the engine supposed to sit within the engine compartment?

History: Desert Pig Bought a '71 55 with a non-mounted 2F from an '83 60 series. The frame had NO mounts. I visited a fellow 55 owner to take measurements to install "new" mounts and had them welded in. The rear mounts are not yet welded due to the skewed motor.

I used recycled 40 frame mounts for the front and 55's for the rear (BH location). 60 series rubber mounts up front and 55 rear. 60 and 55 block mounts up front and 55's at the BH.

Now that the 2F is in, it sits crooked. I figured it would be straight. The front of the motor is towards the DS / rear towards the PS. I rechecked the dimensions taken and the mounts are on the money, but it does not look right. The fan is obviously not parallel to the radiator. (It has NO clearance either; it's a clutch fan. I must need a rigid instead?)

The mounts seems to be correct (per measurements), but I don't remember my 40 having a sideways motor.

Any ideas?

Yup, engines are offset in 55s. (and 40s).

Clutch fans don't work in 55s. (except '78 with the 2-row radiator).

I think what he is saying is the motor is "cock-eyed" in addition to be offset.

If so then landCrusher you have a problem. The motor should rest aligned in the engine bay but set off to the left/port side a bit. You can see it in the front brackets that connect the motor to the motor mount.

Yes, I knew about the offset to the drivers side. This sucker is "cock-eyed" as rsbcruiser says.

It really doesn't make sense. Longer mounts go on the PS, short on the DS. I unbolted the rubber mount on the PS to try to swing the engine straight. Twisted it until the DS rear mount hit the frame. It's still cocked sideways!

WTH!

[edit]
After looking at many threads and pictures, I believe I have the "short shaft" water pump. Didn't know about the fan clutch however. Gotta source a rigid. I have an old 40 pump, I believe I can just swap the flanges to mate to a rigid fan.

Motor is supposed to be offset and cockeyed...fj 60 motor in a 55 has clearance issues w/ fan/ radiator. Have an 86 motor in my 77 pig. For the time being, I have a slim line high out put electric fan pulling thru the rad. I am still running the fj 60 water pump. Also have a wider fj 60 radiator, so I have compounded my issues...Thinking I have to use the non clutch pump and fixed plastic fan-loose the oil cooler (oh well) and get the original radiator cored. As for the alignment... I will post up a pic.....HTH

these pics prolly don't highlight the slant very well...When I had the factory fan on the end of the water pump, the passenger side was about 3/8" closer to the radiator than the drivers side. The rear of the block sits closer to the passenger side frame rail than the front. Some one will concur.

Thanks! Yes, I can see the slant. That appears to be about the same as what I have.

If you are willing to, could you pull measurements from the front cross-member and/or the frame horns to the center of front mounts? It would give me some peace of mind.

I was considering going the electric fan route; placing the biggest pusher possible inside/ in-between the headlights. I could avoid any interference that way, but cooling may suffer not using a mechanical fan. I don't know. Still tossing it around . . . .

ya, I'll get you those #s. I know that the cooling capabilities are hampered by the electric fan. I only have trouble tho so far when pulling up a long climb...REALLY consider going w/ the older pump/ fan/ radiator combo- save you trouble down the road.

Not the offset, not the slanty thing either, that thing is cockeyed in there and that just is not right. The rear output flange should be parrallel to the rear axle flange and lined up to it to put it another way. That is a head scatcher. Did you use the engine to motor mount brackets from an FJ55? Now that I think about it I do believe the rear brackets are different lengths too. Let me go check.

Rear engine (bellhousing) brackets are definitely different, passenger side is about 3" longer than driver side. Front welded-on mounts are different too.

I really have a hodge-podge of brackets/mounts. The pig had NO frame brackets on it when I bought it.

From the pic:

Front Mount:
#'s 1 and 6 are mated (PS) Both are from a 40 series.
#'s 2 (FJ-40) and the stock '83 2F block mount (looks like #5) are mated (DS)
Frame and block mounts and have #7 (60 rubber) installed in-between

Rear (Bell-Housing) Mount:

55 series brackets, rubber, and mounts. The frame brackets were removed from one of Temecula Tim's 55's. Rubber and BH mounts were picked up elsewhere.

Also, be aware. Rubber donuts & bell housing mounts are not symmetrical side to side. I forget exactly how, now, but one rubber donut is under and one rubber donut is over where it bolts to the frame mount...

Although those rubber 'donut' engine mounts are shown in the picture, I'm not using those.

The rubber bell-housing mounts are those big, round, metal encased rubber ones.

Oh boy, that's a head scratcher there. That last pic has the holes for a clutch slave mount but it is on th eleft side, something not right there. here is a pic of the left rear mount on mine, followed by the right rear mount. Sorry about the clutter, hope it helps.

That last picture is actually from T-Tim's 55. However, my bell-housing mounts are just like his (lower 2):

The top 2 are 40 mounts.

Tim's other BH mounts (also different):

I see your problem, you've still got the cap on your beer bottle...there's an SST for that.
